Access your 1098-T through myPortal. (Under MyAccount > Statements tab)

IHL's had the option of choosing between two reporting methods:

  • Box 1 — Tuition Paid [1] due to federal regulation, Columbia College will only report data in this box beginning with the 2018 1098-T's.
  • Box 2 — Tuition Billed [2] Prior to 2018, Columbia College reported data in Box #2 on the 1098-T tax form. Based on institutional reporting requirements under federal law, beginning with the 2018 Tax Year, Columbia College will report Box 1. The 1098-T form only reports tuition paid towards Qualified Tuition Related Expenses (QTRE) during the calendar year, from Jan. 1 through Dec. 31 of the specified calendar year.

1 Box 1 will reflect payments made from: personal payment, federal grants/loans, scholarships, GI Bill© payments, etc. Any excess funds that paid beyond the QTRE will not be reported in Box 1. Refunds from any excess payments will not be reported in Box 1.

2 The 1098T form is generated to assist eligible students in applying for specific education-based tax credits. If you or your tax preparer has additional questions regarding how to use form 1098T or tax credit eligibility, please contact the Internal Revenue Service or call 1-800-829-1040.

Eligibility

The 1098-T reflects payments made by the student towards the QTRE. Students may not receive a 1098-T if there are no eligible payments.

Box 5 — Scholarships or grants: Scholarships and grants generally include all payments received from 3rd parties (excluding family members and loan proceeds). This includes payments received from governmental and private entities such as the Pell Grant, Department of Veterans Affairs, the Department of Defense, civic, religious organizations and nonprofit entities.

Reporting Requirements Between Calendar Years

Often, students register for classes in December that do not begin until January. In those cases, the tuition paid for those classes could have been reported on the prior year’s 1098-T, depending on the calendar year the payments were made.

For example: If a student registered in December 2018 for a class that began in January 2019, the payment for that class will have been reported on the applicable year, depending if the payment was made in December of 2018 or January of 2019.
