Hazing Prevention Programs and Responses

Columbia College defines hazing as any activity expected of someone joining or participating in a group that humiliates, degrades, abuses, or endangers them, regardless of a person’s willingness to participate.  Hazing encompasses a wide range of behaviors and activities, mostly physical, ranging from seemingly harmless activities, such as blindfolding and scavenger hunts, to more dangerous and extreme physical punishments, including sleep deprivation, alcohol consumption, and excessive exercise. Hazing most often occurs in the context of organizations, clubs, and athletics.

There are three components that define hazing:

  1. It occurs in a group context
  2. Humiliating, degrading, or endangering behavior
  3. Happens regardless of an individual’s willingness to participate

Columbia College community members have many venues in which to report incidents of suspected hazing and receive support if they have been hazed. Concerns or complaints about hazing should be reported as soon as possible to the Associate VP of Student Experience or designee or Human Resources in a timely manner by submitting an Incident Reporting Form. The Associate VP of Student Experience or designee or Human Resources, will make an initial evaluation, and determine appropriate next steps based on the specific circumstances of the situation.
