Columbia College's Reaffirmation of Accreditation Process
Pathway Models for Reaffirmation of Accreditation
HLC maintains processes for determining eligibility for accreditation, for achieving candidacy status, for achieving initial accreditation, and for maintaining accreditation. HLC currently offers three programs for maintaining accreditation: the Academic Quality Improvement Program (AQIP) Pathway, Standard Pathway and Open Pathway. The college was approved for the HLC Open Pathway process for reaffirmation of accreditation in 2013.
Open Pathway
The Open Pathway is a 10-year accreditation cycle that consist of an Assurance Review, Quality Initiative and Comprehensive Evaluation Visit.
Assurance Review
An Assurance Review takes place in Year 4 and Year 10 of the Open Pathway Cycle and consist of an Assurance Argument and Evidence File. The Assurance Argument will be composed of the Criteria for Accreditation and Core Components. Columbia College will use the online Assurance System to file the Assurance Argument and Evidence File into an electronic portfolio.
The Criteria for Accreditation and Core Components
The Criteria for Accreditation and Core Components are the standards of quality by which HLC determines whether an institution merits accreditation or reaffirmation of accreditation. The criteria consist of five areas:
Higher Learning Commission (HLC). "Commission Policies Affecting Institutional Affiliation." Higher Learning Commission Policies. 1 June 2015. Web. 23 Sept. 2015.
Quality Initiative
The Quality Initiative takes place between Year 5 and Year 9 of the Open Pathway Cycle and focuses on the college's major improvement efforts. A Quality Initiative may be designed to begin and be completed during this time. The Quality Initiative may continue a current initiative or demonstrate the achievement of a key milestone in the work of a long-term initiative. HLC expects that institutions are always engaged in quality improvement.
Comprehensive Evaluation Visit
The Comprehensive Evaluation Visit will takes place in Year 10 of the Open Pathway Cycle and includes a comprehensive Evaluation (on-site visit), an Assurance Review, and Federal Compliance Filing. During the Comprehensive Evaluation Visit, a team of peer reviewers will determine whether Columbia College continues to meet the Criteria for Accreditation by analyzing the college’s Assurance Filing. The Comprehensive Evaluation Visit may also consist of a multi-campus review, if applicable. Columbia College’s next Comprehensive Evaluation Visit is scheduled for March 13-14, 2023.
