Course Overview

This course is designed to provide the students with a survey of contemporary principles and practices of management concepts, structure and philosophy. They will learn that the managerial function is not a precise science and as such it continues to evolve. The business world is changing. Technological changes and competition in both domestic and international arena present the modern American manager with unique challenges. We must accept the fact that management is a learned skill, it cannot be inherited. Management is the successful outcomes of integrating the actions of people and resources to attain the most optimal output in accordance with company goals. We never become perfect managers as we continue to gain experience and learn throughout our careers. As you progress through this course the learning objectives for each chapter of the textbook will indicate the route we will take as we address the material. The authors of our textbook, Bateman and Snell, have assembled a wealth of information….both historical and current regarding the best and worst business practices. As you work through the textbook, please keep in mind the three “M’s” of management; manpower, materials and money. We readily recognize that managing the human element, manpower, is by far the most important of the three.

Each week we’ll focus on different aspects of the managerial process, its inherent issues, problems and solutions. The textbook chosen for this course offers an excellent compilation of text, current real life illustrations, personal surveys, and case studies. The situations and cases in this new edition are extremely valuable in enhancing our learning process. Of particular importance in this new edition are the “Power of Collaboration” and “Bottom Line” blocks which capture the essence of each respective topic in easily understandable terms. By using this textbook and completing the assigned work, the student should derive a considerable amount of knowledge regarding the management principles from this course. The syllabus is structured around the sharing of knowledge and information. Students will be challenged to think “outside the box” and to offer solutions to situations which they might never encounter outside this forum.

Assignment Overview

Readings

You are expected to read and understand the course text. Please give this task your utmost attention. Generally, the student learns most of what they get from a course by reading the assigned materiel. With online learning the reading component becomes the key to successful outcomes.

Discussions

There will be one or two graded discussion questions each week. Each question is worth 10 points. Your original response to each question is due by Wednesday at 11:59pm CT each week. You are expected to respond to a minimum of two other students with constructive commentary by Saturday at 11:59pm CT.

Thoughtful participation in discussions is a course expectation and is required of all students. You are expected to read the discussions posted weekly. Your posting should be original and relevant to the assigned topics. Simply rephrasing another student's post is not acceptable. Discussion postings should be comprehensible and effectively communicate your ideas. Please pay attention to use of capitalizations, misspellings, incomplete sentences, and other violations of grammatical rules.

Dropbox Assignments

You will complete seven dropbox assignments during this course. Dropbox assignments will consist of question taken directly from the textbook. You should complete the assigned questions and submit them as a single Word document to the Dropbox. Each assignment is due Sunday by 11:59pm Central Time of the week assigned.

Group Research Project

There are four critical documents which comprise the Group Research Project.  They must be completed and turned in to the instructor. First is the Group Contract, available in Week 3, which outlines the duties and responsibilities of each teammate. This document provides a clear direction for the project, deadlines, and rules for interaction. Second is the Group Research Paper, in which all group members will have a role to fulfill. Third is a Self-Evaluation Form which each team member will complete to advocate for the work they completed and their grade.  Fourth is a Peer Evaluation Form for evaluating your peers' group work in terms of the Group Contract. Both evaluation forms, available in Week 7, serve the purpose of providing overall participation feedback to the instructor. The only way a group can succeed is for all students to contribute their “fair share” of effort to the project. Should someone be a “slacker” then the instructor will assign the project grades accordingly.  Submission of the Group Contract, Peer Evaluation and Self-Evaluation is worth 10 points each.  The paper is worth 100 points.  Thus the Group Research Project totals 130 points.

           Group Contract (10 Points)

Each work group will consist of four members.  Early in week three, your instructor will assign students to each group.  Groups will be identified as…Group I, Group II, Group III, etc. Once the identity of the group is provided, early in Week 3, it then becomes the responsibility of the group to collaborate within to form its own working strategy. A Team Leader should be identified as well as at least two researchers/writers.  Finally the fourth member of the group may be assigned whatever tasks the group deems necessary to research, document and present a viable product.  The Team Leader will assign deadlines, continually monitor all progress, ensure the project remains on schedule, communicating this the instructor and submit the agreed upon Group Contract to the appropriate dropbox folder by Week 3 by 11:59pm CT.

Group Research Paper (100 Points)

Your group will be asked to research, analyze, and present your findings on the topic chosen by your group in the Group Contract. The topics offered for your selection will all be closely related to the course materiel, real life managerial situations, and/or leadership topics. We will discuss the topics available after you have had a few weeks of experience with the textbook and the course material. Your Group Research Paper is due by Friday of Week 7 by 11:59pm CT and should consist of no less than 6 pages double spaced and a bibliography of 6 or more sources prepared in MLA Style Guide format. The Team Leader will submit your completed Group Research Paper to the dropbox.

    Peer and Self-Evaluations (10 Points each)

Then to ensure all team members participate to their fullest ability, each group member will submit a Peer Evaluation Form and a Self-Evaluation Form. Should any team member fall short of the overall team expectations such failure should be reported on these forms.

To avoid any compromise whatsoever, both the Peer and Self-Evaluation Forms will be submitted to the respective dropbox by Sunday of Week 7 11:59 PM CT.  Your instructor reserves the right to alter a non-participant grade accordingly.


Exams

You will complete an exam every two weeks for this course. You will receive a graded based on your understanding of the core material and ability to effectively express that knowledge. Each exam will consist of 60 multiple choice questions and you will have 90 minutes from the time you begin the exam.

Discussion 1
For each of the management approaches discussed in the Appendix, give examples of each you have seen. How effective or ineffective were they? (Question 8, page 37)

Note: Your examples can be either from your personal or business world. As we can see from the evolutionary compendium the managerial function has transpired through several phases. The systems and scientific approach first offered us a basic understanding of the workplace and the ability of the human element to function therein whereas more recent refinements have given us a more systematic approach and all too often the bureaucratic theory as well.
Discussion 2
Identify a decision you have made that had important unexpected consequences. Were the consequences good, bad or both? Should you, and could you, have done anything differently in making the decision? (Question 3, page 99)

Note: Decisions are made daily in both our personal lives and the business world. As managers every decision we make affects either people or expenditures of resources. In this example, either your personal decision or a business decision is acceptable for illustration.

Note: If we read the Wall Street Journal or maybe Barrons Business Review we will find daily reports of corporate activities. True, the media (TV and Internet sources) also tend to perpetuate any business transaction not considered ethical or properly aligned with current leadership. Let’s keep our examples to true business reports and avoid the political side which currently dominates the media.

The chapter specified some of the changes in the external environment that can provide business opportunities (technological discoveries, lifestyle and taste changes, and so on). Identify some recent changes on current trends in the external environment and the business opportunities they might offer. (Question 13 page 238).

Note: Your findings here should be very easy as we have had numerous evolutionary changes in the business community over the last 50 years. As we look back it is hardly conceivable at the improvements we have made in both human relations and technological advancements.
Discussion 5
Pick a job you have held, and describe it in terms of span of control, delegation, responsibility, authority, and accountability. (Question 5, page 272)

Note: The business world offers many varied opportunities to excel in the workplace. As workers we often do not stop to think about the terms listed in this question. The Unity of Command Principle refers to the basic rule that an employee must answer to a single manager and not several. An exception to this rule is the Matrix management concept. Your response here should be easily structured after having experienced the chosen organization where you worked.

Group Contract
Early in Week 3, you will discover the identity of your group members. Then collectively fill out the Group Contract. I've provided topics for you to select from in the Content Area that are closely related to the course material, real life managerial situations and/or leadership. Review the list as a group and select one to research, analyze and present. The Team Leader will then submit the Group Contract to the Dropbox by Sunday 11:59 PM CT.

If you were going into business for yourself what would be your core capabilities? What capabilities do you have now, and what capabilities are you going to develop? Describe what your role would be in a network organization, and the capabilities and roles of other firms you would want in your network. (Question 5, page 302)

Note: Entrepreneurship offers much flexibility in how you…the creator…manages and operates your business. Most people who strive to create their own business focus on the retail sector. Others might consider a consultant or even a service type business. Whatever the direction you choose to take, you will interface with other individuals (hopefully customers) who will pay for your products and services. This question focuses on what your strongest attributes are which will serve to ensure your success in the chosen business initiative.

Week 5: Managing the Diverse Workforce and Leadership

Note: Both demographics and diversity will serve to drive the future workforce structure. How these factors are integrated into the overall business base will determine the ultimate outcome. Your opinion is a valued approach to a viable solution for future managers…which you are studying to become.
Discussion 8
Identify someone you think is an effective leader. What traits and skills does this person possess that makes him or her effective? (Question 3, page 406)

Note: Since our class is focused on the business environment, let’s keep our examples in that sector. We need to stay away from the world of politics here and direct our thoughts on some really successful business leaders. These individuals can be local or national and may be involved in any phase of the business environment; wholesale, retail, manufacturing, service industry, etc.

Group Research Paper
As a group you will be asked to research, analyze and present your findings on your topic. The Group’s Research Paper is due Friday of Week 7 by 11:59pm CT and should consist of no fewer than 6 pages double spaced and bibliography of 6 or more sources prepared in MLA Style Guide format. At least 3 of the sources should be other than from the Internet. The Team Leader will submit the completed Group Research Paper to the respective dropbox.
Week 6: Motivating for Performance and Teamwork

Give some examples of situations in which you wanted to do a good job but were prevented from doing so. What was the impact on you, and what would this suggest to you in your efforts to motivate other people to perform? (Question 5, page 437)

Note: This question builds on your background in the business world and also how you prepare to move to the leadership positions in the managing of corporate resources. We will all have good and bad experiences as we progress up the corporate ladder and assume more responsibilities. Let’s hear your story and how you accommodated the problem as well as what the outcome was.

Discuss personal examples of virtual conflict and how they were managed, well or poorly. (Question 7, page 464)

Note: Managers deal with conflict daily. Solutions must be identified and resolutions must be implemented. Your personal experiences here will be a learning tool for us all.

Note: The age of automation has given us much flexibility in data management. How we utilize this additional information is critical to the success of our business enterprise. We receive, store, manipulate, and transmit data on a continual basis. Sometimes mistakes and/or errors occur. This question allows you to identify those instances when things were both good and bad.

In your opinion, what is the greatest technological invention of the last 100 years? Why?

Note: This is a wide open question. Please address it either from a personal or a business perspective. Historically, we think of personal gadgets we might be using, however when we step back and view the world as a whole many technological changes have occurred. Your response here will be most interesting as all our technology has served to enhance our lifestyles.

Student Conduct

Plagiarism

Your grade will be based in large part on the originality of your ideas and your written presentation of these ideas. Presenting the words, ideas, or expression of another in any form as your own is plagiarism. Students who fail to properly give credit for information contained in their written work (papers, journals, exams, etc.) are violating the intellectual property rights of the original author. For proper citation of the original authors, you should reference the appropriate publication manual for your degree program or course (APA, MLA, etc.). Violations are taken seriously in higher education and may result in a failing grade on the assignment, a grade of "F" for the course, or dismissal from the College.

Collaboration conducted between students without prior permission from the instructor is considered plagiarism and will be treated as such. Spouses and roommates taking the same course should be particularly careful.

Online Participation

You are expected to read the assigned texts and participate in the discussions and other course activities each week. Assignments should be posted by the due dates stated on the grading schedule in your syllabus. If an emergency arises that prevents you from participating in class, please let your instructor know as soon as possible.

Attendance Policy

Attendance for a week will be counted as having submitted any assigned activity for which points are earned. Attendance for the week is based upon the date work is submitted. A class week is defined as the period of time between Monday and Sunday (except for week 8, when the work and the course will end on Saturday at midnight.) The course and system deadlines are based on the Central Time Zone.

Cougar Email

All students are provided a CougarMail account when they enroll in classes at Columbia College. You are responsible for monitoring email from that account for important messages from the College and from your instructor. You may forward your Cougar email account to another account; however, the College cannot be held responsible for breaches in security or service interruptions with other email providers.

Students should use email for private messages to the instructor and other students. The class discussions are for public messages so the class members can each see what others have to say about any given topic and respond.

Late Assignment Policy

An online class requires regular participation and a commitment to your instructor and your classmates to regularly engage in the reading, discussion and writing assignments. Although most of the online communication for this course is asynchronous, you must be able to commit to the schedule of work for the class for the next eight weeks. You must keep up with the schedule of reading and writing to successfully complete the class.

No late discussion posts will be accepted.

Discussion Thread assignments may not be made up. The only way to conduct a productive discussion online is to reply promptly. If you miss the opportunity to post your response by the Saturday deadline, you will receive a "zero" for that particular discussion topic.

Dropbox assignments submitted late will result in the paper’s grade being reduced by 3 points each day they are late. Late assignments will not be accepted after midnight on Tuesday. Non-submission of a given assignment will result in a grade of “zero” for that requirement.

Group Research Project: The Group Research Project is due no later than Friday of Week 7 by 11:59pm CT (midnight). If you finish your Group Research Project early and want to turn it in, feel free. All grades will be posted in week 8, regardless of when the papers are submitted. Research papers may be turned in late up until Sunday night (midnight) of week seven, but 10% (10 points) of the point amount will be deducted the first day it is late (Saturday) and then 15% (15 points) the second day (Sunday). Group Research Projects will not be accepted after Sunday night (midnight) of Week 7.

Quizzes cannot be taken after the due date without instructor approval.

Course Evaluation

You will have an opportunity to evaluate the course near the end of the session. A link will be sent to your CougarMail that will allow you to access the evaluation. Be assured that the evaluations are anonymous and that your instructor will not be able to see them until after final grades are submitted.
