eText Information

If a course uses an eText, (see Textbook information above) the book will be available directly in Desire2Learn (D2L) and through the VitalSource eText reader the Friday before the session begins, if registered for courses prior to that date.  Students will have a VitalSource account created for them using their CougarMail email address. Upon first login to VitalSource, students may need to verify their account and update their VitalSource password.  More information about how to use the VitalSource platform, including offline access to eTexts, can be found in D2L.  Students that would like to order an optional print-on-demand copy of eligible eTexts can do so through the VitalSource bookshelf at an additional cost.  Once orders are placed, it can take approximately five to seven business days for students to receive their print-on-demand books.

  Course Overview

Students will become familiar with the major functional areas of business – accounting, finance, marketing, and management. The objectives of the course will be accomplished through the use of weekly quizzes, online research, and discussion assignments.

  Assignment Overview


Read all assigned chapters for the week prior to completing any discussions or quizzes.


There will be one graded discussion question each week which includes an original posting and response. You are expected to respond to at least one other student with constructive commentary to earn your response points, except in Week 8 when only an original post is required. Each discussion question is worth 10 or 15 points with 2 points for the response. Please review the Schedule of Due Dates above for weekly scoring. Your original posts are due by Friday with your response posts due Sunday at 11:59pm CT except for Week 8 when only an initial post will be due Saturday.

Detailed directions for all discussions are available in the Content area of the course. You must review this information in order to accurately complete the assignment. If you have questions about an assignment, please post your question/problem under the General Discussions topic in the Discussions area. Assignments must be posted in the body of the message box, not as an attachment. Discussion postings submitted as attachments will receive zero credit. Please review the Discussions Expectations page in the Content area before posting your Week 1 assignment.


You will complete a quiz every week. Each quiz is worth 50 points and will consist of multiple choice questions covering the assigned chapters. You will have one timed attempt of 40 minutes. Each quiz is worth 50 points which in total will account for 76% of your final grade. You should not approach these quizzes lightly. Not completing one quiz will lower your final grade by approximately one letter grade. The best way to prepare for the Quizzes is to take the Practice Quizzes found in the "Quizzes" area of the course.

Quizzes may not be made-up. Due date extensions must be requested on or prior to an assignment’s due date. Since the required text includes an ebook, no due date extensions will be available due to lack of a textbook. Quizzes become available at 12:01 am on the Wednesday before the due date. Quizzes must be completed by the following Sunday, no later than midnight, Central Time.  The Week 8 Quiz is due Saturday at midnight, Central Time.
Quiz questions will require students to understand, apply, and analyze concepts relating to the principles and practices of business. You should know the material thoroughly. Although you will have the use of the text, you will have very little time to use it. Quizzes are designed to be taken closed-book, you should prepare accordingly.

Extra Credit

There is no opportunity to earn extra credit in this course.


  • All communication in this course is formal. Formal rules of English, including punctuation, capitalization, and grammar, apply to all submissions, including email.
  • Class participants will observe the rules of internet etiquette.
  • The General Discussions link is the preferred method of communication.It should be used to ask questions about assignments.
  • Email should be used for questions relating to quiz questions and grading.

Student Conduct

Online Participation

You are expected to read the assigned texts and participate in the discussions and other course activities each week. Assignments should be posted by the due dates stated on the grading schedule in your syllabus. If an emergency arises that prevents you from participating in class, please let your instructor know as soon as possible.

Attendance Policy

Attendance for a week will be counted as having submitted any assigned activity for which points are earned. Attendance for the week is based upon the date work is submitted. A class week is defined as the period of time between Monday and Sunday (except for week 8, when the work and the course will end on Saturday at midnight.) The course and system deadlines are based on the Central Time Zone.

Cougar Email

All students are provided a CougarMail account when they enroll in classes at Columbia College. You are responsible for monitoring email from that account for important messages from the College and from your instructor. You may forward your Cougar email account to another account; however, the College cannot be held responsible for breaches in security or service interruptions with other email providers.

Students should use email for private messages to the instructor and other students. The class discussions are for public messages so the class members can each see what others have to say about any given topic and respond.

Late Assignment Policy

An online class requires regular participation and a commitment to your instructor and your classmates to regularly engage in the reading, discussion and writing assignments. Although most of the online communication for this course is asynchronous, you must be able to commit to the schedule of work for the class for the next eight weeks. You must keep up with the schedule of reading and writing to successfully complete the class.

Due date extensions must be requested on or before the assignment’s due date and require instructor approval.  Approval will only be granted under significant extenuating circumstances, such as hospitalization or extreme personal/family emergencies. Maintaining access to the Internet is a requirement for this course.  No exceptions for lack of Internet access will be granted unless the loss of service is community-wide and due to weather.  Under no circumstances will an assignment or quiz be accepted after the last official day of class for the session.  No "Incomplete Grades" will be awarded. 

Course Evaluation

You will have an opportunity to evaluate the course near the end of the session. A link will be sent to your CougarMail that will allow you to access the evaluation. Be assured that the evaluations are anonymous and that your instructor will not be able to see them until after final grades are submitted.
