Overview of computer hardware, software, programming, and information systems as applied in the modern business environment. Hands-on applications of word processing, spreadsheet, and data management software are used to explore use of the microcomputers in business.

eText Information

If a course uses an eText, (see Textbook information above) the book will be available directly in Desire2Learn (D2L) and through the VitalSource eText reader the Friday before the session begins, if registered for courses prior to that date.  Students will have a VitalSource account created for them using their CougarMail email address. Upon first login to VitalSource, students may need to verify their account and update their VitalSource password.  More information about how to use the VitalSource platform, including offline access to eTexts, can be found in D2L.  Students that would like to order an optional print-on-demand copy of eligible eTexts can do so through the VitalSource bookshelf at an additional cost.  Once orders are placed, it can take approximately five to seven business days for students to receive their print-on-demand books.

Physical Course Materials Information

Students enrolled in courses that require physical materials will receive these materials automatically at the address on file with Columbia College.  Delivery date of physical materials is dependent on registration date and shipping location.  Please refer to confirmation emails sent from Ed Map for more details on shipping status.

Returns: Students who drop a course with physical course materials will be responsible for returning those items to Ed Map within 30 days of receipt of the order.  More specific information on how to do so will be included in the package received from Ed Map.  See here for Ed Map's return policy. Failure to return physical items from a dropped course will result in a charge to the student account for all unreturned items.

  Course Overview

This course will present a variety of concepts for the digital world in which we live. Through the study of technology and the many components and devices we use every day, you will learn how these all work together to help make your life more productive by becoming digitally literate.

Each week we will focus on a different aspect of the field of computer information systems with class discussion based on online articles or our text. These discussions will deepen your understanding of the concepts and issues encountered within our increasingly digital lives.

We will be using is MyITLab, which allows us to electronically assess the skills you will learn using Microsoft Office 2016. You will create projects using Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Participation in this course will require the basic technology for all online classes at Columbia College:
  • A computer running Windows (7, 8, or 10)
  • Microsoft Office 365 Home Premium Academic 2016 (Office 2016) with Word, Excel, and PowerPoint (Active Columbia College students have access to a free version of Office while enrolled)
  • Reliable Internet access
  • A web browser
  • Acrobat Reader

  Course Learning Outcomes

  1. Describe in some detail the various technical components of computers.
  2. Demonstrate a working knowledge of the fundamental systems model as it relates to information systems.
  3. Explain the role that computers play in contemporary society, including limits and uses, and critically evaluate the effect of computers on society.
  4. Demonstrate an understanding of application software and their appropriate uses and productively use application software for word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and Internet applications.
  5. Produce and analyze various forms of computer output.
  6. Apply information literacy skills when researching digital literacy concepts and trends.

  Assignment Overview

Readings

You should complete all readings prior to participating in discussions or submitting MyITLab assignments for the week.

Discussions

Each week you will actively participate in a discussion. You must provide concrete examples from the readings and web resources, integrate your personal observations and knowledge in an accurate and insightful way to support your post, and include word choices and sentence structures that are suitable for college-level discussions.

Your responses to others’ posts should also be well developed, fully explaining your response to the classmates’ posts.  Make responses that add to the conversation and take it further; simply posting “I agree” or “good job” does not help develop ideas.

Each week’s discussion topics will be open from Monday to Saturday. Your initial post is due by 11:59 PM Central Time (CT) on Thursday and two responses to classmates due by 11:59 PM CT on Saturday. See the grading rubric in the course for more details on grading expectations.

Training Videos (optional)
Training videos, in addition to the step by step instructions in each chapter, are available in MyITLab to demonstrate the skills needed to complete the training and assessment projects.

A and B Projects
These projects are closely associated with each chapter of the GO! textbook.  They are training projects where you implement the Microsoft Office skills covered in the chapter. You must download files from MyITLab project to complete each project. Specific instructions for each project are included in the downloaded files.

When you download the files, make sure to save them to an easily identifiable location on your computer (such as the desktop) and do not change the file’s name. If you download the zip file, make sure to extract the files before beginning the project. To submit your Training Project, you will need to upload your completed assignment to the MyITLab grader. There is more information on this process in the course.

You have three attempts, with the highest score posted as your grade. Training projects are worth 10 points each. Your training projects are due Friday night at 11:59 pm CT each week.

G Projects
Each week the G Mastery Project requires you to apply the skills you mastered while completing the A and B projects. You will complete the project offline using downloaded files from MyITLab. Specific instructions for each project are included in the downloaded files.

When you download the files, make sure to save them to an easily identifiable location on your computer (such as the desktop) and do NOT change the file’s name. If you download the zip file, make sure to extract the files before beginning the project. To submit the project, you will need to upload your completed assignment to MyITLab.

You have two attempts, with the highest score posted as your grade. The G Mastery Projects are worth 20 points each. They are due Sunday night at 11:59 pm CT each week except for Week 8 where they are due Saturday night at 11:59 pm CT.

Quizzes

Each week, you will take a quiz over the weekly Technology in Action readings. You will have 40 minutes to complete the quiz and you will only receive one attempt. Each quiz is worth 30 points and will include a combination of multiple choice, true/false, and matching questions. The quiz is due by 11:59 PM CT on Sunday of the week it is assigned.

Exams

Your midterm and final exams are proctored tests located in the Quizzes area of the course. It is your responsibility to arrange a proctor following the procedures outlined in the Content area of the course. Both exams are closed book and will include a combination of multiple choice, true/false, and matching questions questions over the concepts covered in Technology in Action. You will have 2 hours to complete the exam. Each exam, worth 130 points, will be available beginning Monday and you must take the exam before 11:59 pm CT on the day it is due. The Midterm will cover chapters from Weeks 1-4 and the Final will cover chapters from Weeks 5-8.

Introduction Discussion

Introduce yourself to your classmates. Please share more than just your name. Include your profession, degree, hobbies, interest in computers, and any other information that can help us get to know you.

What is your most memorable interaction with technology? Think about what your personal and professional life will be like once you’re moving up in your career. What areas of computer and digital literacy will be most important for you? What about in your daily life?

Discussion 1

Explain what the idea of the digital divide means to you. Don’t just copy a definition out of the textbook or off the web.

Next, search the Web to find information about a recent project that is aimed at reducing the digital divide. Summarize this project in your own words. Where it is located, what are they trying to do and share what you find interesting about it? Is the project still working, was it success? Include the project name in the subject line of your discussion. Please avoid highlighting a project that another student has used. Make sure to include a working link to your article or website. What kind of project would you propose/create to help reduce or eliminate the divide in your own area?

Cloud computing is becoming more popular, and many users are working from the cloud and not even realizing it. Use the readings for this week and an article from the web to support your post. Remember to include an active link to your article.

Discussion 3

Chapter 6 walks you through conducting a system evaluation on your computer to decide if your current computer meets your needs for now and in the future.

  • What operating system and version are you using? Why?
  • What is your CPU utilization? (For Windows 10 see page 223, Step 2) What does this mean for your computer?
  • What is your total memory? How much is still available? (Step 3) What does this mean?
  • What is your hard drive capacity? (Step 4)

Explain each of your results in detail from your system evaluation. What do these things mean? Are there issues? How will you address those issues? What type of technology user are you, does your computer meet your needs? If not, what considerations will you include when purchasing a new computer or device? If your computer does currently meet your needs, provide a scenario in which you would need an upgrade and explain why.

This week, Chapter 7 covers networking and connecting to the internet. After reading the chapter, look online for another resource that helps explain how to setup and secure a home network to share with the class.

  • Share your resource and explain why you selected this one in particular.
  • Have you set up your home wireless network to restrict access from unauthorized individuals? Why or why not? 
  • What kinds of devices do you have connected to your home network? If you don’t have any, what kinds of devices would you consider connecting to your network? Explain why.

When software runs awry, the readings for this week mention a few examples of costly programing mistakes. Find a major programming error from the last five years and briefly summarize the case and what happened. Include the name of the case in the title of the post and avoid one another student has already selected.

Thinking about your case and errors/glitches in general, who should be held responsible for defective software, corporate management, production managers, software engineers, or even the software user? Explain your reasoning. Are these errors just an example of the price society pays for using complex technology so no blame should be assigned? Explain. What steps can the software industry take to ensure the integrity of its software?

Your readings for this week have discussed databases, data breaches, and networking security in the business world. Find a major data breach within the last 2 years and do some research explain how and why the breach occurred, what information was accessed, and how this information could be misused. Has the incident been fully resolved or are there ongoing security issues with the company or customer information? Remember to include references to your readings and an article from the web to support your post.

Do not use the same data breach as someone else. Include the name of the business or entity impacted by the data breach in the subject line of your discussion.

Think about the term “Internet of Things” in which things (objects, animals, and people) are connected to the Internet and can automatically transfer data over a network. Our society is already filled with many examples of “smart nodes”—such as cars, appliances, and entertainment devices—that are connected to the Internet.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of developing a more robust Internet of Things and continuing to add more smart nodes? Explain. What are a few items that are in your personal Internet of Things?

Online Participation

You are expected to read the assigned texts and participate in the discussions and other course activities each week. Assignments should be posted by the due dates stated on the grading schedule in your syllabus. If an emergency arises that prevents you from participating in class, please let your instructor know as soon as possible.

Attendance Policy

Attendance for a week will be counted as having submitted any assigned activity for which points are earned. Attendance for the week is based upon the date work is submitted. A class week is defined as the period of time between Monday and Sunday (except for week 8, when the work and the course will end on Saturday at midnight.) The course and system deadlines are based on the Central Time Zone.

Cougar Email

All students are provided a CougarMail account when they enroll in classes at Columbia College. You are responsible for monitoring email from that account for important messages from the College and from your instructor. You may forward your Cougar email account to another account; however, the College cannot be held responsible for breaches in security or service interruptions with other email providers.

Students should use email for private messages to the instructor and other students. The class discussions are for public messages so the class members can each see what others have to say about any given topic and respond.

Late Assignment Policy

An online class requires regular participation and a commitment to your instructor and your classmates to regularly engage in the reading, discussion and writing assignments. Although most of the online communication for this course is asynchronous, you must be able to commit to the schedule of work for the class for the next eight weeks. You must keep up with the schedule of reading and writing to successfully complete the class.

No late discussion posts will be accepted.

Late MyITLab projects will be accepted up to one week after the due date with a 10% per day late penalty. Late quizzes or exams will not be accepted, unless prior approval is received from the instructor.

Course Evaluation

You will have an opportunity to evaluate the course near the end of the session. A link will be sent to your CougarMail that will allow you to access the evaluation. Be assured that the evaluations are anonymous and that your instructor will not be able to see them until after final grades are submitted.

Proctor Policy

Students taking courses that require proctored exams must submit their completed proctor request forms to their instructors by the end of the second week of the session. Proctors located at Columbia College campuses are automatically approved. The use of ProctorU services is also automatically approved. The instructor of each course will consider any other choice of proctor for approval or denial. Additional proctor choices the instructor will consider include: public librarians, high school or college instructors, high school or college counseling services, commanding officers, education service officers, and other proctoring services. Personal friends, family members, athletic coaches and direct supervisors are not acceptable.
