This course examines the organizational human resource function and contemporary techniques for managing human resources. Discussions focus on EEO law, workforce diversity, managing change, staffing, training and development, compensation and benefits, EEO/AA and other human resource topics. Cross-listed as BUSI/MSCJ 526.

If a course uses an eText, (see Textbook information above) the book will be available directly in Desire2Learn (D2L) and through the VitalSource eText reader the Friday before the session begins, if registered for courses prior to that date.  Students will have a VitalSource account created for them using their CougarMail email address. Upon first login to VitalSource, students may need to verify their account and update their VitalSource password.  More information about how to use the VitalSource platform, including offline access to eTexts, can be found in D2L.  Students that would like to order an optional print-on-demand copy of eligible eTexts can do so through the VitalSource bookshelf at an additional cost.  Once orders are placed, it can take approximately five to seven business days for students to receive their print-on-demand books.

  Course Overview

In this course, we will discuss the role of Human Resources Management in the workplace, including how to recruit, train, and retain a diverse workforce and the importance of safety and health in the work environment. Because we live in a litigious society, we will also spend time learning Employment Law, how to prepare in advance for possible legal situations, and some important lawsuits that have set precedents in the workplace.

  Assignment Overview


Complete weekly reading assignments prior to participating in discussions or completing Dropbox Assignments.


Participation in each discussion must take place within the week it is posted. You are expected to respond to each discussion topic with an in-depth initial post on or before Thursday and must respond to at least two other learners prior to Sunday 11:59 pm CT each week. Please review the rubrics in the course Content area. No credit will be given for thread responses after the deadline; full credit will not be given if you do not engage others in discussion.

Dropbox Assignments

You will complete five writing assignments in addition to the Research Paper. Dropbox Assignments should be prepared using MS Word. This method preserves their formatting. Include your name in every document. ALL assignments must be a minimum of 1 full page. Dropbox Assignments are due by Saturday at 11:59pm Central Time of the week assigned and should be submitted as a single Word document.

Research Paper

You will write a 5-10 page APA-cited research paper on an approved topic. Please review the Research Paper Topics and additional information available in the Content area of the course. The title page, abstract and references do not count toward the 5 page minimum requirement for the research paper. Your completed Research Paper is due Saturday of Week 7.

Make sure you are citing from the 6th edition of the APA manual. Many students like to use Wikipedia as a source for their papers. THE INSTRUCTOR WILL NOT ACCEPT this as a reference source due to the fact that Wikipedia can be edited at will by anyone viewing the site. Wikipedia doesn't claim that their articles are truthful, and the ISP used to post the article has explicit legal protection, since ISPs are not considered "publishers". There is a minimum of 5 references that must include our textbook and at least 2 other books. Internet sources only are not acceptable.


You will complete a midterm and final exam for this course. Each exam will become available on Monday and is due Saturday by 11:59pm Central time of the week assigned. Exams are open book, but don’t be fooled, you need to study! You will have 180 minutes and only one attempt to complete the exam. Each exam consists of 80 multiple choice questions and 2 short answer/essay questions.

Discussion 1-1
Introductions and becoming familiar with our web based course. Introduce yourself in the "Introductions" thread of our class conference, of our "virtual classroom". Please give us more than your name. Include your profession, hobbies, interest in human resources, family and any other information that can help us get to know you.

Assess the organization where you currently or formerly worked. Why would it be important for your company to make human resources into a competitive advantage? How can HR contribute to doing so? What are some examples of employers who do this?

  • What do you think is causing some of the problems in the bank’s home office and branches?
  • Do you think setting up a HR unit in the main office would help?
  • What specific functions should an HR unit carry out? What HR functions would then be carried out by supervisors and other line managers? What role should the Internet play in the new HR organization?

Discussion 2-1
Something to think about! Chapter 2 discusses major employment laws and their purposes. Evaluate the laws and in your opinion discuss the law that you feel has had the most impact (positive or negative) on the workplace and why. Respond to at least two other students with different law selections.

Strategic Thinking! Review the Strategic Management Process in Chapter 3. What is strategic management? What are the steps in the strategic management process? In your opinion what company has an excellent strategy and why do you think it’s great? Use the internet, books, articles or it is your company with the great strategy. Post links.

Provide the following information as a single Word document.

  • Your HR related research topic. Review the Content area of the course for available topics.
  • Provide the outline for your paper
  • Provide five references (APA 6th edition cited) that you will be using. Remember, our textbook must be part of your references. More books than internet sites must be used and you may only use scholarly sites; Wikipedia, Google etc. are unacceptable sites for the research paper.
  • Make sure you are citing from the 6th edition of the APA manual.

  • How would you explain the nature of the panel interview Maria had to endure? Specifically, do you think it reflected a well-thought-out interviewing strategy on the part of the firm, or carelessness on the part of the firm's management? If it was carelessness, what would you do to improve the interview process at Apex Environmental?
  • Would you take the job offer if you were Maria? If you're not sure, is there any additional information that would help you make your decision, and if so, what is it?
  • The job of applications engineer for which Maria was applying requires: (A) excellent technical skills with respect to mechanical engineering; (B) a commitment to working in the area of pollution control; (C) the ability to deal well and confidently with customers who have engineering problems; (D) a willingness to travel worldwide; and (E) a very intelligent and well-balanced personality. Read Application Case “Salary Inequities at AstraZeneca” Chapter 11 page 379 and answer the questions below.

  • Although the case with the OFCCP is closed, we wonder if there are any less discriminatory explanations possible for why our women sales reps on average earned less than men. If so, what are they?
  • Our own company now uses a point method to evaluate jobs for pay purposes, and each resulting job class also has a rate change associated with it. Sales associates are now paid a salary that is not based on incentive pay. List three specific things we can do to ensure that a similar problem (inequitable pay based on gender) does not arise again, assuming they continue using the point plan.
  • What sort of compensation plan would you recommend for us, and why?

Student Conduct

Online Participation

You are expected to read the assigned texts and participate in the discussions and other course activities each week. Assignments should be posted by the due dates stated on the grading schedule in your syllabus. If an emergency arises that prevents you from participating in class, please let your instructor know as soon as possible.

Attendance Policy

Attendance for a week will be counted as having submitted any assigned activity for which points are earned. Attendance for the week is based upon the date work is submitted. A class week is defined as the period of time between Monday and Sunday (except for week 8, when the work and the course will end on Saturday at midnight.) The course and system deadlines are based on the Central Time Zone.

Cougar Email

All students are provided a CougarMail account when they enroll in classes at Columbia College. You are responsible for monitoring email from that account for important messages from the College and from your instructor. You may forward your Cougar email account to another account; however, the College cannot be held responsible for breaches in security or service interruptions with other email providers.

Students should use email for private messages to the instructor and other students. The class discussions are for public messages so the class members can each see what others have to say about any given topic and respond.

Late Assignment Policy

An online class requires regular participation and a commitment to your instructor and your classmates to regularly engage in the reading, discussion and writing assignments. Although most of the online communication for this course is asynchronous, you must be able to commit to the schedule of work for the class for the next eight weeks. You must keep up with the schedule of reading and writing to successfully complete the class.

No late discussion posts will be accepted.

All late Dropbox assignments are worth only 50% of the original potential points possible. You have only one week to submit late work; after one week, the Dropbox assignment is worth zero points.

No assignments are accepted after the course has closed. The last date to turn in assignments is listed in the grading table.

Course Evaluation

You will have an opportunity to evaluate the course near the end of the session. A link will be sent to your CougarMail that will allow you to access the evaluation. Be assured that the evaluations are anonymous and that your instructor will not be able to see them until after final grades are submitted.
