Dr. Karr double-majored in History and British Literature at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, earning the Bachelor of Arts there in 1991. He followed up with a Master’s Degree in History from the same institution in 1993, and then a Doctor of Philosophy in Modern European History from Vanderbilt University in 2002. From 2002-2004, he taught world history and the history of technology at Auburn University, and from 2004-2007, he taught classes in world and British history at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. He joined the Columbia College faculty in 2007.
Teaching areas include European, Middle Eastern, and world history; research interests include British radicalism, the British-Australian criminal transportation system, and the politics of 18th-century British theater. His most recent publication is British Jacobin Politics, Desires, and Aftermaths: Seditious Hearts (Routledge, 2021), co-authored with Dr. James Epstein.
