Bookstore manager honored for service to campus
Thursday, April 09, 2009

(COLUMBIA, Mo.) -- Sarah Steeno '04, manager of the Columbia College Bookstore in the Atkins-Holman Student Commons, received the Campus Outreach Award from Barnes & Noble College Booksellers. The award recognizes outstanding efforts in building relationships with the campus community. Steeno has been the bookstore's manager for six years.

"Managers are nominated for the award because they exemplify customer service, demonstrate a superior commitment to their campus, take time to get to know faculty and student organizations, and in essence, consistently go above and beyond to ensure campus needs are met. Sarah Steeno epitomizes all of these qualities, and much more," said Karen DiScala, spokesperson for Barnes & Noble.

More than 700 Barnes & Noble employees competed for the award and only five were victorious, including Steeno. She beat out bookstore managers in the Missouri, Kansas and Illinois region, which includes stores on 16 campuses.

“Sarah is always looking for ways to incorporate her store into what we’re trying to do on our campus,” said Faye Burchard, the college's dean for Campus Life.

Steeno started her career with Barnes & Noble as a student at Columbia College and was promoted to manager two years later. She has been a student government advisor for four years and is very involved in admissions and campus life activities.

"I make sure I get to know everyone on campus -- Day, Evening and Graduate students -- and they know who I am. They know I'm approachable and they can come up and talk to me," she said. "I put myself out there because I love the college and want to see students do well."
