Lisa Ford-Brown

Dr. Ford-Brown earned her B.S. and M.A. at Indiana State University majoring in Speech Communication with minors in English, the Visual Arts, and Women Studies.  She holds a PhD in Speech Communication from Southern Illinois University—Carbondale.  Her teaching interest include: Introduction to Public Speaking, Communication Theory and Research, Intercultural Communication, Gender Communication, Introduction to Theatre, Performance Studies, Oral Interpretation, Advance Public Speaking and Persuasion, Interpersonal and Small Group Communication, as well as Understanding Human Communication. Dr. Ford-Brown has taught the introduction to public speaking course for over 25 years. Beyond her teaching responsibilities, Dr. Ford-Brown has assisted in the creations of a master degree at a previous institution as well as a minor and major in communication at Columbia College. She serves or has served on numerous on-campus, regional, and national committees. From 2003-2005, she chaired the Columbia College Humanities Department and served as a member of their Board of Trustees from 2008-2010. Dr. Ford-Brown is a long-standing member of the National Communication Association, Central States Speech Association, Pi Lambda Theta International Society and Professional Association in Education and the National Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. Dr. Ford-Brown is the author of the DK Guide to Public Speaking.

Outside of the academy, Dr. Ford-Brown and her life partner, Bruce, live on a small farm with 14 chickens, 4 guinea fowl, 2 golden retrievers, and 2 cats.  They enjoy traveling, camping, fishing, gardening, wood working, pottery making and watching the grass grow on their 20 acres.
