Teachers know the importance of lifelong learning. They understand the need to stay current and relevant as educational expectations and standards evolve.
The Master of Arts in Teaching program at Columbia College is designed to advance your understanding of best practices in the classroom. You’ll engage in critical and creative thinking to consistently base decisions on research and reflection. Additionally, you will advance your knowledge through active learning, problem solving and exploration.
The education faculty has adopted core proposals of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards as program goals. Under this, teachers:
- Are committed to students and their learning
- Know their subjects and how to teach those subject areas
- Are responsible for managing and monitoring student learning
- Think systemically about their practice and learn from experience and
- Are members of learning communities
MAT students benefit from a flexible program that allows them to work around class and school responsibilities.
The MAT Post-Baccalaureate Certification may be pursued through the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Columbia College offers courses that satisfy the requirements for individual certification areas.
The MAT Alternative Certification Program may be pursued through the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education if students have a passing score on the appropriate Missouri Content Assessment.Columbia College students who want teacher certification and do not meet graduate admissions requirements may qualify for undergraduate Post-Baccalaureate Certification.

Some courses you may take
The study of diversity as it pertains to cultural differences. Issues examined include the impact of economic, social, cultural, political, religious, ethnic, racial, and gender influences. Diversity in the classroom is addressed, including the role of the classroom teacher. Prerequisite: graduate standing; and admission to the Teacher Certification Program or full MAT or M.Ed. status.
The application of portfolio research skills needed to document the accomplishments of program goals. The integrative project must meet quality standards for graduate research, and requires acceptance by the graduate faculty, following a satisfactory oral presentation and defense. Students must participate in a final review which includes the portfolio presentation, self-evaluation and program evaluation. All must demonstrate, in an exit interview, reflective analysis, analytic and creative skills. Students should consult their advisor in the semester prior to enrollment to begin planning this experience. Completion may require more than one enrollment session, but capped at three extensions. Prerequisites: EDUC 500; an approved plan of completion; full MAT Status.
The study of educational research from a comprehensive perspective. Included are: techniques and concepts of social and behavioral research; writing in the APA format; ethical standards governing educational research; experiences in the use of internal and external critique methods; readings in curriculum, assessment, philosophical and psychological research products; experiences accessing and using archival and web-based data sources; evaluation of descriptive, true-experimental and quasi-experimental research designs; identification and use of appropriate parametric and nonparametric statistical analyses; computation and interpretation of effect size tests of practical significance; conducting primary and secondary source literature reviews; demonstration of research designing; and use of portfolio research. Prerequisite: Graduate standing; full MAT or M.Ed status.
The study of psychological principles in educational environments. Emphasis is on the major learning theories including those proposed by Pavlov, Skinner, Bandura, Piaget, Vygotsky, and others. Classroom instruction and assessment, child and adolescent development, memory, and motivation are also among the topics addressed. Prerequisite: Graduate standing.

CC awarded $1.38m grant to help underserved students finish college
*The MAT and M.Ed. degree programs are approved in the State of Missouri by the Missouri Department of Higher Education. State approval does not guarantee licensure eligibility in any state for the MAT, M.Ed. or any specialty emphasis areas within these degree programs. (Certification programs within some M.Ed. emphasis areas are for Missouri certification only.) For all states other than Missouri, there has been no determination of licensure eligibility. Students residing outside of Missouri must email EducatorPrep@ccis.edu to determine eligibility in their state.
