Why did you choose Columbia College?
It was fate honestly, after returning home from NIU I wanted to attend a college close to home. I was very unsuccessful finding a 4 year school locally, but to my surprise I saw a sign for Columbia College off the interstate. I stopped in and applied, and the rest is sweet college history.

What are your plans for the future?
I plan to go to gradate school for social work next year as well and attempt to complete the novel that I have started. I would like to start my own organization to help children get academic support and mentoring programs. I am also interested in increasing literacy for children around the country.

What was your favorite course, and why?
My favorite class was Stats 324, because it was my Achilles heel. I avoided it for years due to my love for math, I was terrified to take it online and took it in seat. I met the most amazing instructor that I have had throughout my entire college career. She made it very understandable and a very open and free learning environment. But most of all she didn't miss a beat and I came away with an A in the course and a new found respect for Statistics.

Is there anyone you would like to thank?
I would like to thank my Son for inspiring me to be the best mother I can be and to set a great educational example for him. Also, my mother who has always encouraged me to continue my education with diligence, my father who taught me to never give up and that I could complete and accomplish anything I set my mind and heart to do. I would definitely like to thank my love and fiancé for all of his support, love, and encouragement. I also would like to thank Ruth Tichenor, the disability coordinator at the main campus for all of her support throughout my struggles with my illness as well as my academic advisor, Heidi at Lake County Campus for all of her support and advice. I thank the entire Lake County staff, especially assistant director, Vance and Andrea the financial aid representative. Most of all I would like to thank my sisters and their children as well as all of my family. The strong family support system that I have is the main reason I was able to continue my education. In memory, I thank my cousin, Dr. Charles E. Clark for accomplishing all of his goals in such a short lifetime, he is and always will be my motivation. Thank you.

8/4/2013 4:11:50 PM Patricia Baiyewu Shalamar, My Sweet daughter. You were created on purpose for purpose. One of those purposes is to attain greatness and leave a legacy for all those who know you can truly understand that with much sacrifice and perseverance you can fulfill your goals. It does not matter how long it takes to complete the task. What really matters is that you complete it. You my daughter have completed a task you began years ago. Your love, care, and attention towards your son was your first priority and education became your second love. You've cultivated both very well. There are many words I can use to describe your character. A few of them would be; intelligent, witty, passionate, self-confident, authentic, and loyal. There are two words that stand out in the forefront of my mind the most... "diligence & determination. During your educational journey, you have battled with illness and many other hardships but, I have watched you exemplify those two words, take them to another level, and give them new meaning. I am both proud and honored to have you as my daughter & sometimes personal professional counselor. Thanks for being a "Strong Listener" I love you. Report abuse
