This course provides an introduction to the fundamental principles of leadership and management pertinent to health care and nursing. Students will explore the interrelated processes of thinking systematically, developing reflective judgment and exercising leadership. Competencies necessary to succeed in a nursing leadership role in organizations and contemporary society are analyzed and applied to clinical scenarios. Students utilize self-reflection to assess their own leadership potential.

Course Objectives

  • To discuss the purpose of organizational structures and patient care delivery models in nursing practice.
  • To describe the characteristics of shared governance model in nursing practice.
  • To examine how nursing is affected by healthcare regulations, politics and healthcare reimbursement.
  • To explain the importance of quality and safety measures to organization health.
  • To analyze complex healthcare workplace issues.

    • Analyze organizational structures in nursing practice.
    • Explain staffing models related to patient acuity and hours per patient day.
    • Classify organization and nursing concerns related to the Institute of Medicine's report on the nurse workforce development.
