Catalog Description:

The Chamber Choir serves as the primary lab choir for the beginning conducting class. The choir prepares and performs literature written for SSAA choirs (women) in odd spring semesters and TTBB choirs (men) in even spring semesters. Audition required. Prerequisite: Previous musical experience.

Previous musical experience; four semesters of MUSI 180 or junior standing. 

Course Rotation for Day Program:

Offered Spring (SSAA choirs for women in odd springs; TTBB choirs for men in even Spring).

Course Objectives

  •      To understand and apply principles of vocal pedagogy.

  •     To study and perform vocal literature in a variety of musical styles.

  •     To effectively communicate the text and music to singers and listeners.

    Measurable Learning

  •     Demonstrate progressive results in individual vocal performance.

  •     Sing independently on pitch and in rhythm, with appropriate timbre, diction and posture, and maintain a steady tempo.

  •     Sing accurately and with good breath control throughout the singing range, alone and in small and large ensembles.

  •     Evaluate and adjust personal vocal contribution as compared to the entire ensemble blending vocal timbres, matching dynamic levels, and responding to the cues of a conductor.

  •     Sing a large and varied repertoire of choral literature for up to four parts, with and without accompaniment with expression and technical accuracy.

  •     Identify, comprehend and interpret concepts relative to the elements of music.

  •     Sing expressively, with musical sensitivity to diverse musical styles with appropriate dynamics, phrasing and interpretation.

  •     Major five-finger patterns beginning on black keys



  •     Physical exercise in preparation for singing

  •     Mental exercise in preparation for singing

  •     Vocal exercise in preparation for singing

  •     Sectional rehearsals

  •     Ensemble rehearsals

  •     Performances
