Catalog Description:

This course continues to help students whose primary language is not English build on their knowledge of English grammar required for oral and written communication. Class time is devoted to communicative and inductive exercises emphasizing select grammatical structures and features of English. As a result, students develop skills in understanding form, meaning and use in academic discourse settings. Prerequisite: ESOL 100 or placement in the advanced level of the ESOL Program.

Course Objectives
  • To promote grammatical awareness and fluency.
  • To evaluate differences between written and spoken language.
  • To understand and use select grammatical structures appropriately.
 
Measurable Learning Outcomes:

 

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the following: past perfect vs. present perfect continuous; past perfect vs. past perfect continous; past time modals; passive; Gerunds vs. infinitives; relative clauses; real conditionals, unreal conditionals, and wishes; noun clauses; reported speech
  •  Describe and explain the importance of language awareness in the language-learning process.
 
Topical Outline:

Note: Depending on student needs and time constraints, instruction and practice of the following grammatical structures may occur in a different order and/or be condensed or omitted in favor of other requested or needed grammatical structures.

  • Present, past, and distant past
  • Modals
  • Passive, gerunds, and infinitives
  • Modifying nouns
  • Conditionals
  • Noun clauses and reported speech
 

Recommended maximum class size for this course: 15
