Science seminar at which students, faculty and outside speakers present and discuss research and topics appropriate to the natural sciences. Evaluation is Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory. Course may not be repeated to remove a failing grade. Cross-listed as BIOL/CHEM 197, 198, 297, 298, 397, 398, 497, 498. Prerequisite: Declared major or minor in the Science Department.

Course Objectives
  • To analyze and discuss current issues in science.
  • To evaluate methods of communicating about the sciences.
    Measurable Learning
  • Discuss scientific literature.
  • Critically analyze scientific issues and viewpoints.
  • Evaluate the methods of science communication.
    Topical Outline:
  • Discussion of the different methods by which scientific activity and thinking are communicated
  • Series of seminars requiring active discussion and evaluation
    Culminating Experience Statement:

    Material from this course may be tested on the Major Field Test (MFT) administered during the Culminating Experience course for the degree. 
    During this course the ETS Proficiency Profile may be administered.  This 40-minute standardized test measures learning in general education courses.  The results of the tests are used by faculty to improve the general education curriculum at the College.
