The curriculum is designed to provide English language learners with group and individual instruction in American English pronunciation and speech patterns to improve comprehensibility and boost confidence. This course is open to all non-native speakers who would like to work on their oral production skills.

Pronouncing American English: Sounds, Stress, and Intonation
Course Learning Outcomes
  • Demonstrate increased phonological (sound) awareness.
  • Discriminate between targeted American English sounds and error productions.
  • Produce targeted sounds in American English more consistently and with greater ease, both in prepared and spontaneous speech.
Major Topics/Skills to be Covered:
  • Association between English alphabet and American English sounds
  • Configuration of articulators (e.g., the tongue, lips, and jaw) for producing specific sounds of speech, with an emphasis on those sounds that students’ native languages do not contain
  • Phonemes and blends (i.e., blending sounds into words)
  • Stress and intonation patterns
  • Select pragmatic aspects of American English
  • Oral repetition and practice to promote fluency and automatacity when speaking
  • Influence of native language on spoken English, including the identification and monitoring of any specific “problem” sounds
  • Strategies for dealing with misunderstandings that hinder effective communication¬†
