  Course Overview

A course designed to broaden the student’s background with numerous tools used in the design, manufacturing and assembly operations as well as the service sector of business. Here you will find a compendium of problem-solving tools which will greatly facilitate the managerial function.  This course will focus on the manufacturing and operational environment and will be taught from a quantitative perspective. There is strong emphasis on techniques and skill for various kinds of operations. Though many of the tools studied here were developed during the industrial revolution of the U.S. production environment they continue to be used along with the augmentation of the automation technology of recent years. You will also find that the service industry also has adopted and uses these techniques very effectively.

  Assignment Overview


You should complete all required readings prior to participating in discussions or completing weekly homework. The course materiel is critical to successful comprehension and completion of the weekly assignments. All students are expected to read and understand the course materiel.  Please give this task your utmost attention.


Each week you will be responsible for answering and posting discussion questions. Initial posts are due Thurday and responses to other students are due Sunday. Students are expected to make at least one reply to each discussion question. Your reply to other students must contain substantive substance. A post such as “Good post” or “I agree” is not an acceptable constructive comment and will not earn a grade. A portion of the grade is earned by the initial response and the remaining points are for replies to other students. Any discussions posted after the week they are assigned will receive zero credit. All discussion posts, both student answers and comments to other student posts must be made on the Discussion board. Offensive, inflammatory wording and personal attacks will not be tolerated. Disagreement can be healthy, but only if it’s done tactfully and constructively. In a diverse population as these classes are we cannot force our personal values and beliefs on others. Civility and sensitivity are expected in all our communications. The absolute deadline for Discussion posts is Sunday at 11:59 pm. However, you are strongly urged to post no later than midweek so other students can read and benefit from your ideas and experiences.


Your homework questions will come directly from the textbook. You should complete the assigned weekly questions and submit them as a single Word document to the dropbox. Homework is due Sunday by 11:59pm Central Time, excluding Week 8 when all assignments are due by Saturday at 11:59pm Central Time.


You will complete four exams for this course. You will receive a graded based on your understanding of the core materiel and ability to effectively express that knowledge. The exams are due Sunday of Week 2, Week 4 and Week 6 at 11:59pm Central Time and the final exam is due Saturday of Week 8 at 11:59pm Central Time. The time limit does not allow for much use of the textbook.

Research Project

The Research Project is due Friday of Week 7 at 11:59pm Central Time. For the project, you will select one topic from a list provided and write a 3 page, single spaced paper in 12 point font. You must include a bibliography of your sources. Additional information and research topic options are available in the Content area.

Discussion 1

Find a company you are familiar with and explain how it uses its operations management function. Identify what the company is doing correctly. Do you have any suggestions for improvement? Provide your sources of information for the response. (Question 14, page 24)

Note: As we evaluate the processes and activities within the organization it is the key decision processes and follow through that results in the conversion of resources into finished products and services. When you evaluate your chosen company please focus on those key activities that yield results. This is how good managerial initiatives result in quality outputs and thus profits for the firm.

Discussion 2

Find a company that makes quality its competitive priority. Find another company that makes flexibility its competitive priority. Compare these strategies by listing 5 positive and 5 negative points for each company. (Question 6, page 49)

Note: Our textbook gave us the four key categories of competitive priorities; cost, quality, time and flexibility. All four are key to success, however, corporate leadership will usually rank order these four and work to satisfy them in their chosen sequence. The quality function will most always be high on the priority list because consumers will not return to purchase inferior quality products.  On the other hand, flexibility can sometimes drive the efforts to satisfy the customer, particularly in the case of custom produced items.

Note:  Robotics, computer driven manufacturing and moving production lines have transformed the corporate production operations into much improved efficient activities. You will find these and other applications of automation in almost every production operation.

Note: As the American household continues to add more and more automated gadgets, the necessity to keep those items operational has created a surge in the need for service technicians. Today, slightly over 50% of the American workforce works in the service industry. Everyone from the truck driver who delivers the goods to the IT technician who keeps your office computer operational are consider to in a service group.

Find three local companies that you believe exhibit high quality. Next, find three national or international companies that are recognized for their quality achievements. Provide the source of your research. (Question 4, page 179)

Note: One easy research key to this question might be those companies who have recently competed for the Malcolm Baldridge Award which is the highest recognized quality award presented in the United States. The key to finding local companies will probably center on those who have qualified under the iSO 9000 Quality process. These companies have been evaluated by outside authorities and certified to consistently produce high quality products

Describe three recent situations that you were directly affected by poor product or service quality. (Question 2, page 227)

Note: This question should be easy for everyone, we all have disappointments in the functionality of some of the items we purchases such as a used car that stops running on the way home from the dealer, the garment that fades the first time it hits the washer, etc.

Research Project
During Week 3, you will be given access to the instructions and topics for your Research Project. This phase of our course is necessary to ensure we acquire the most detailed knowledge possible from our topical materiel and the compressed timeframe of only 8 weeks for the semester. Please give the project some thought and planning before you develop your approach then precede with some meaningful research. Your research project is due Friday of Week 7.

Find an example of successful JIT manufacturing. For your chosen examples, provide a brief summary of the manufacturing flow and explain how they successful use JIT. (Question 4, page 262)

Note: Most JIT operations function as suppliers to large manufacturing production lines. The key to JIT is trust on the part of both partners. The prime trusts the JIT supplier to have parts at the right place at the right time in the configuration needed to go directly to the production line. The JIT supplier in turn must trust its suppliers for components and assemblies to arrive in the correct configuration to go directly to the prime’s production line.  The ISO 9000 suppliers are one step ahead on this concept.

Discussion 8

Find an example of successful TQM implementation. For your examples, explain how the company employs the TQM principles. (Question 6, page 262)

Note: The theory of TQM is to create the concept of continuous improvement and quality improvement at the source. This concept makes the TQM function an integral component of the manufacturing process and allows for continual growth and the goal of identifying quality problems at their source of origin. Companies that employ this approach to quality will allow any operator on the production line to stop the line if they suspect a defect is in progress.

Find and discuss business examples of overcapacity and under capacity. Your examples should provide arguments for both sides. (Question 6, page 348)

Note: Historically, the American industrial base has run an excess capacity of around 24%. There are strong arguments, both pro and con, of this large magnitude of excess capacity. On the pro side, corporations may be geared up for anticipated future contracts or support of military surges. On the con side, the heavy investment in sunk costs related to the excess capacity takes away much of the stockholders profit.

Discussion 10

Find examples of good and bad location decisions. For your examples, what made each location decision good or bad for the company? (Question 8, page 348)

Note: Our text tells us that the location of a facility is usually related to its capacity. Both fixed costs of plant and equipment and the transportation cost of moving goods play key roles in location decisions. Should the operation be located close to its suppliers (parts and raw materials) or its customers? A third factor is often the tax incentives offered by cities due to economic conditions where the available workforce needs more opportunities. This last factor tends to be more important in lesser skilled task operations.

For this week’s discussion, you are asked to visit a local business to observe and report on some key operational elements. It is recommended you visit a relative small but active business operation for this research. A company with 50 to 100 employees can be better evaluated than a large corporation with many different work centers employing thousands of workers. Your response will be a consolidated answer to the following questions:
  • Provide a brief description of the business visited (business name, type, location, etc)
  • Provide the management level of the manageroal team you interviewed.
  • Describe the job to be done, the workers needed for the jobs, and how the workers help achieve the objectives of the business. (Question 2, page 424)
  • Identify the different types of inventory used. (Question 1, page 476)
  • Explain the different functions of its inventory (Question 2, page 476)

Discussion 12

Visit a local service provider, interview a mid to upper level manager and determine how it uses aggregate planning. For the service company you choose, provide a brief description of the business visited (business name, type, location, level of management interviewed, etc) (Question 13, page 511).

Note: Perhaps our most visual service providers are our utility companies. Some might also add the cell phone companies and/or the maintenance related technicians who repair our houses, plumbing, roofing, painting, etc. Even hospitals are service providers for our health care. Any of these entities will serve as a good source of understanding the aggregate planning process.

Discussion 13

Explain the concept of backward scheduling and give examples of how you use backward scheduling in your personal life. (Question 7, page 546)

Note: Backward planning is the process of determining where each of the varied production processes starts so supplies, components and assemblies can be ordered to arrive in a logical manner to assemble the final goods which will then meet delivery schedules. As individuals, we know our daily lives are filled with deadlines, goals and milestones. We must mentally apply a logical sequence of events in our schedules to ensure we meet those pre-set events.

You are expected to read the assigned texts and participate in the discussions and other course activities each week. Assignments should be posted by the due dates stated on the grading schedule in your syllabus. If an emergency arises that prevents you from participating in class, please let your instructor know as soon as possible.

Attendance Policy

Attendance for a week will be counted as having submitted any assigned activity for which points are earned. Attendance for the week is based upon the date work is submitted. A class week is defined as the period of time between Monday and Sunday (except for week 8, when the work and the course will end on Saturday at midnight.) The course and system deadlines are based on the Central Time Zone.

Cougar Email

All students are provided a CougarMail account when they enroll in classes at Columbia College. You are responsible for monitoring email from that account for important messages from the College and from your instructor. You may forward your Cougar email account to another account; however, the College cannot be held responsible for breaches in security or service interruptions with other email providers.

Students should use email for private messages to the instructor and other students. The class discussions are for public messages so the class members can each see what others have to say about any given topic and respond.

Late Assignment Policy

An online class requires regular participation and a commitment to your instructor and your classmates to regularly engage in the reading, discussion and writing assignments. Although most of the online communication for this course is asynchronous, you must be able to commit to the schedule of work for the class for the next eight weeks. You must keep up with the schedule of reading and writing to successfully complete the class.

No late discussion posts will be accepted.

The instructor will exercise some flexibility in accepting late homework submittals. Legitimate excuses will result in full credit as normal submittals. When work is just late for no legitimate reason the work will be graded at 65% of the full credit point system. Non-submission of a given homework/research project assignment will result in the grade of 0 for that requirement. Discussion board posts must be made during the week assigned. No discussion responses should be sent to the instructor after the week ends. As with homework assignments the discussion submittals must be posted to the respective week discussion board for credit. There will be no exceptions for this item.
