If you buy the textbook from a source other than MBS Direct, you will still need a MyLabsPlus access code. MyLabsPlus access codes must be purchased through MBS Direct. Access codes that come packaged with textbooks from sources other than MBS Direct are not guaranteed to work. Do not purchase a MyMathLab access code; MyMathLab codes are NOT equivalent to MyLabsPlus codes, and will not work for this course.

In this course, we will continue to study the language and concepts of algebra. We will be using variables, learning the rules of exponents and polynomials, modeling real-life situations with graphs and equations, solving linear and quadratic equations, and solving systems of linear equations.

Participation in this course will require the basic technology for all online classes at Columbia College:

- Microsoft Office or another word processor such as Open Office

You will be expected to actively participate in one assigned discussion each week. Discussion assignments will utilize what you’ve learned reading the textbook as well as the Content area of the course. The goal is for you to collectively look for patterns among the problems, provide thoughtful analysis and synthesis in all your postings, and solve problems using multiple concepts. Discussion postings also further the understanding of the concepts and ideas behind the calculations. In Weeks 4 and 8 you will also discuss study tips and methods you have employed to align your study and progress with the Course Learning Outcomes. Responses that don’t substantively add to the discussion are not considered graded responses.

In each Discussion, you will choose one (1) question to post as your initial response in the Discussion topic. You must choose a question that hasn’t been posted. Duplicate postings will not receive credit. Your initial post/response to that question will lead other students through the thought processes and key ideas or concepts used to solve the problem, or if difficulties arose, where they were encountered. In addition to responding to a question for the initial post, you will respond substantively (more than one word/short phrase) to at least one of your classmate’s posts. Initial posts are due by 11:59 pm CT Friday and responses to classmates should be posted by 11:59 pm CT Sunday each week, except in Week 8 where replies will be due at 11:59 pm CT Saturday.

A grading rubric and additional guidelines on answering Discussion questions will be provided in D2L for student review. Discussion assignments are worth 6 points each. The Introduction Discussion is worth 2 points.

You will complete MyLabsPlus (MLP) Homework each week covering one assignment per section of reading covered, except in Weeks 4 and 8, which will be review of previous weeks.

MLP Homework may be reworked until its due date before submission, as well as for extra practice after the due date; however, homework completed or redone after the due date will incur a 10% late penalty. MLP offers adaptive learning tools to assist students with the homework. If you use *Show Me an Example*, you will then return to your original problem and complete it. If you select *Help Me Solve It*, you will then complete a new, similar problem. If you miss the problem 3 times, you will then click on Similar Problem to generate a new version to complete for credit.

Grades for MLP Homework will be transferred at the end of the session. The final score at the end of the session is the one that will be reported in the gradebook and is recorded as a percentage of the 200 points possible for homework assignments.

MLP Homework will be due by 11:59 pm CT Sunday of the week they are assigned except in Week 8, where they are due Saturday.

You will complete a Quiz each week in Weeks 1-3, and 5-7. Additionally, there will be Practice Exams in Weeks 4 and 8 that will be ungraded practice (worth up to 5 bonus points) for the Midterm and Final Exam.

Quizzes have a 60-minute time limit, are multiple-choice, and automatically graded. You can take the Quizzes up to 5 times during the open period and your best attempt will be recorded to the grade book. Quizzes and Practice Exams will remain open throughout all weeks in order to give you more practice, however, you are strongly encouraged to attempt at least one quiz attempt during the week the designated quiz opens. Quizzes will be locked before their appropriate week.

Quizzes are worth 25 points each, except in Weeks 4 and 8 (practice exams) which are worth up to 5 bonus points.

**Midterm Exam**

The Midterm Exam will test your knowledge of material covered in Weeks 1- 3 and be comprised of multiple-choice questions. The Midterm Exam will be proctored with a 2-hour time limit. You will have one attempt at the Midterm Exam. A practice Midterm Exam will be available for further practice.

The Midterm Exam will be open from 12:01 am CT Tuesday through 11:59 pm CT Sunday of Week 4. The Midterm Exam is worth 300 points.

**Final Exam**

The Final Exam will test your knowledge of material covered in Weeks 1-3 and Weeks 5-7 and be comprised of multiple-choice questions. The Final Exam will be proctored with a 2-hour time limit. You will have one attempt at the Final Exam. A practice Final Exam will be available for further practice.

The Final Exam will be open from 12:01 am CT Tuesday through 11:59 pm CT Saturday of Week 8. The Final Exam is worth 300 points.

Attendance for a week will be counted as having submitted any assigned activity for which points are earned. Attendance for the week is based upon the date work is submitted. A class week is defined as the period of time between Monday and Sunday (except for week 8, when the work and the course will end on Saturday at midnight.) All students are provided a CougarMail account when they enroll in classes at Columbia College. An online class requires regular participation and a commitment to your instructor and your classmates to regularly engage in the reading, discussion and writing assignments. Although most of the online communication for this course is asynchronous, you must be able to commit to the schedule of work for the class for the next eight weeks. You must keep up with the schedule of reading and writing to successfully complete the class.

No late discussion posts will be accepted.

Late MLP Homework will incur a 10% penalty.
