Survey of the current crisis intervention literature and introduces the theories, principles, concepts and techniques of crisis intervention. Upon completion, students should be able to predict who may need crisis intervention services, and demonstrate the provision of first-order crisis intervention.

  Course Overview

This course will introduce to the student not only an understanding of the theories and concepts of crisis intervention, but also proper approaches to safely and effectively resolve crisis situations. Provide tools to work with victims and perpetrators–effective communicative calming techniques to aid in successful resolution to conflicts surrounding crisis situations as they happen and assist in long- term solutions.

  Course Objectives

  • To evaluate and apply theories, principles, concepts, and techniques of crisis intervention in social, therapeutic and business settings.
  • To engage in and evaluate first order crisis intervention skills.
  • To conduct and report in writing (APA format) research relevant to crisis intervention.

  Assignment Overview

Reading Assignments

Readings must be completed prior to submitting any assignment.


Discussion postings involve understanding and conceptualizing the course material covered each week. You are required to answer the discussion question in a thorough fashion reflecting upper-level erudition. You are required to constructively post an original posting and reply to a minimum of ten postings to the responses of fellow students. The first discussion postings (original) must be posted by Wednesday each week to allow other students time for constructive responses. You must also read at least 50 percent of all postings made by fellow students. Keep in mind, your replies must not be “one or two word” responses such as “I agree…absolutely…I see your point.” Again, your responses must be in-depth and thorough in nature.

Chapter Assignments

Chapter Assignments are drawn directly from your text readings and involve a comprehensive understanding of each textbook chapter(s). Your responses must be thorough in context and reflect upper-level erudition. The minimum length for each chapter question response is 2-3 full paragraphs for each question, double-spaced and 12 point font (Times New Roman). In order to meet this length requirement, the use of multiple sources is required. Thus, all Chapter Assignment submissions must cite each source of the information (a minimum of two references, which may include your course textbooks) in an APA editing format. All Chapter Assignments are submitted to the Dropbox area of the course in the folder entitled “Chapter Assignments.” Submit all chapter questions as a single document file.


Quizzes will cover the assigned chapters each week must be completed by 11:59 PM Central Time every Saturday and are located in the Quizzes area of the course. Please follow the instructions closely to take and submit your quizzes. You are allowed one timed attempt of 15 minutes per quiz, so I strongly encourage you to complete your readings prior to taking the quizzes.

Term Paper

You will write a term paper for this course. The paper will be double-spaced and a minimum of eight pages and a maximum of ten pages (not including title page, abstract, cited references, etc.).

  • Your paper topic can be on any subject within the field of crisis intervention. Submit your topic to the “Term Paper Topic” dropbox by Saturday of Week 2.  

  • The term paper must be prepared as a Microsoft Word document (.doc, .docx, or .rtf) and submitted to the “Term Paper” dropbox by Saturday of Week 5. It must be typed, double-spaced, and 12 point font (Times New Roman). All papers must be in proper APA format, i.e., a title page, an abstract, in-text citations and a reference page. You must have a minimum of 5 references of scholarly quality (your course textbook can be used as source). 

  • Keep in mind, there are several unacceptable resources which cannot be used for any course assignment, including your term papers.  The use of the following sources will negatively impact your grade:

    • Wikipedia

    • WikiInfo

    • Anarchopedia

  • Remember, Columbia College policies concerning plagiarism will be strictly enforced regarding these term papers. Please take this matter very seriously because plagiarism software is used on every term paper submitted. Do not use term papers previously submitted to other CC courses.

Final Exam

The Final Exam must be completed during Week 8. The Final Exam is located in the Quizzes area of the course and will be available Sunday of Week 7. It can be completed anytime from Sunday until the course deadline on Saturday at 11:59 p.m. CT. The exam is timed, so once started, you will have two hours to submit your responses. Don't forget to save your responses often! Remember, the Final Exam is not a group project and must be completed individually.

Chapter 1

Discussion Introduction

1. Identify the three elements stressed by Schlossberg and Boltz to manage crisis.
2. Discuss the two most valuable tools a negotiator can bring to a crisis. Define the term negotiation and discuss the three points highlighted by Fisher and Ury regarding a successful negotiation.
3. Define the term crisis and discuss in detail the four stages of a crisis incident.
4. Discuss the importance of the eight negotiation points learned during the Nord-Ost incident.
5. Discuss the SAFE Model in negotiations. List the four triggers for de-escalating crisis situations.

6. Define the concept risk assessment and discuss the three issues risk assessment is really about. Discuss the perspectives of Mount, Norko and Baranoski, & Rueve and Welton regarding risk assessment and violence.
7. Identify the risk factors listed for violent offenders, domestic violence, and the mentally ill.
8. Discuss the six-step structured cognitive interview process. Explain the three principles of effective communication. Discuss the seven components to the communication process and the four barriers to effective communication.
9. Discuss the goals and the eight strategies used in active listening.
10. Discuss William Ury’s five-step model for Getting past No. List the four recommendations for negotiating within the realm of social media.

You are expected to read the assigned texts and participate in the discussions and other course activities each week. Assignments should be posted by the due dates stated on the grading schedule in your syllabus. If an emergency arises that prevents you from participating in class, please let your instructor know as soon as possible.

Attendance Policy

Attendance for a week will be counted as having submitted any assigned activity for which points are earned. Attendance for the week is based upon the date work is submitted. A class week is defined as the period of time between Monday and Sunday (except for week 8, when the work and the course will end on Saturday at midnight.) The course and system deadlines are based on the Central Time Zone.

Cougar Email

All students are provided a CougarMail account when they enroll in classes at Columbia College. You are responsible for monitoring email from that account for important messages from the College and from your instructor. You may forward your Cougar email account to another account; however, the College cannot be held responsible for breaches in security or service interruptions with other email providers.

Late Assignment Policy

An online class requires regular participation and a commitment to your instructor and your classmates to regularly engage in the reading, discussion and writing assignments. Although most of the online communication for this course is asynchronous, you must be able to commit to the schedule of work for the class for the next eight weeks. You must keep up with the schedule of reading and writing to successfully complete the class.

No late discussion posts will be accepted.

Late assignments will receive (ZERO) credit.

You will have an opportunity to evaluate the course near the end of the session. A link will be sent to your CougarMail that will allow you to access the evaluation.
