Columbia College—committed to ethics education

Columbia College is dedicated to providing an educational experience that prepares students for a lifetime of learning. This includes not only mastery of academic content, but the exploration of carefully grounded ethical principles. Starting in fall 2001, Columbia College implemented a new general education requirement that all students must complete a course in ethics prior to graduation. The college also added a minor in ethics, philosophy and religious studies. In fall 2002, the college added a Bachelor of Arts major in philosophy and religious studies.

Thanks to a generous donation from John Schiffman in 2002, the college established the Althea and John Schiffman Ethics in Society Lecture Series. Past presenters include Arun Gandhi, grandson of the late Mohandas Gandhi; John Kasich, former U.S. congressman; Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has devoted much of his career to environmental ethics; Soledad O'Brien, television journalist and CNN co-anchor; ; and award winning author, David McCullough.
