Employer name:

Columbia College, Columbia, Missouri

Position title:

Assistant Director of Day Admissions for Columbia College in Admissions

What do you do in that position?

I attend college fairs and high schools to distribute up-to-date information about Columbia College’s academic, professional and recreational opportunities. I also build rapport with and promote Columbia College to students, parents, high school counselors and key leaders in the recruitment territory.

How is that experience?

This is the job I have wanted since first becoming a student at Columbia College. It gives me the opportunity to travel and interact with prospective students, which I enjoy because it allows me to share my passion for Columbia College with others and assist young people in making a life-changing decision about their education.

What have you learned?

Sometimes in order to get what you want, patience is key. I accepted a job at Columbia College that was not in an area I wanted to pursue for the rest of my life, but it positioned me to continue working while I waited for the position I wanted to open up. Patience paid off as I eventually got the job I truly wanted, and though my previous job wasn’t my dream job, it was still beneficial because it taught me workplace skills that I wouldn’t have gained in my current position.

What Grossnickle Career Services Center resources did you utilize?

I utilized the individual appointment option to work on my resume, as well as attended the business etiquette dinner.

What would you tell other students about your experience with the Grossnickle Career Services Center?

I personally feel that every student should use the Grossnickle Career Services Center throughout college. The staff will show you how to make yourself more marketable, and with the current job market, that is a value that can’t be measured. The center provides these services completely free of charge, so there’s no reason not to take advantage of the assistance. The staff helped me start my job within two days of graduation!
