Unity in the Community
Vision...
To build a conscious community based on awareness, respect and understanding that actively promotes the acceptance of all members in the population, takes a proactive role in limiting the influence of stereotypes and strongly discourages any type of prejudice based on individual differences.
Goals of the program...
- To build coherence through the awareness and understanding of differences within our campus community.
- To assist in the retention of students, faculty and staff by fostering a sense of belonging.
- To promote a healthy academic, social and work environment.
- To support members of our community by using local, regional and national resources.
- To provide a forum for discussion of perspectives in a safe, supportive environment.
- To celebrate our diverse campus community.
Ways to be involved...
As a member of Unity in the Community you have many options for involvement. U in the C has four components; becoming an Open Door...Open Mind, attending the Soup and Substance events, attending the K.I.T.E. programs and reading and /or contributing to the Unidiversity Newsletter.
- Open Doors...Open Minds
This component encourages students, faculty and staff to promote a campus community based on awareness, tolerance and ultimately, understanding. Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed it is the only thing that ever has.
— Margaret Mead By treating all persons with respect and dignity, an opportunity to create a healthy and supportive campus community is realized. Exhibiting an Open Doors... Open Minds card for others to see implies you will listen, support, provide resources and refer. Your primary role is one of an open, active listener. This is an opportunity to make a personal contribution by supporting others and to participate in developing unity in our community here on Columbia College's main campus.
- Soup and Substance
Columbia Community Members are invited to speak on a wide range of topics related to the needs of our campus community. Lunch is provided to attendees and an opportunity to engage in lively discussion in a safe environment is realized.
- K.I.T.E. Coffee House (Knowledge,
Inclusiveness, Tolerance, Embracing:
Taking Diversity to New Heights)
Faculty led discussions and experiential based activities on topics related to issues of inclusion and wellness.
- Unidiversity
A biannual newsletter that goes out in the fall and spring semester. The newsletter focuses on issues related to diversity and includes articles, editorials, member spotlights, personal works and book and movie suggestions for expanding perspectives. Read our latest Unidiversity newsletters:
The price of the democratic way of life is a growing appreciation of the people's differences, not merely as tolerable, but as the essence of a rich and rewarding human experience.
