(COLUMBIA, Mo.) -- Michael Kateman, executive director of Development, Alumni and Public Relations at Columbia College, received the 2008 Outstanding Fundraising Executive award from the Central Missouri Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals. The award was presented at the Philanthropy Center Stage luncheon on Nov. 10.

Kateman was nominated for the award by Missy Montgomery, development officer for major and planned gifts at Columbia College. "He's an amazing philanthropist and the best boss I have ever had," she said.

In a letter announcing the philanthropy award recipients, Jaime Freidrichs, co-chair of the National Philanthropy Day committee, credited Kateman's many years of fundraising experience and "generosity in sharing that knowledge and expertise with others."

"It's an honor to receive this award," said Kateman. "To be recognized by peers is always a great honor and I really appreciate it. I'm proud to be involved in philanthropy."

Kateman recently was elected to the national board of the National Committee on Planned Giving (NCPG), an organization he has been actively involved with for more than 15 years. He also serves on the board of the Heart of Missouri United Way.

Kateman joined Columbia College in 2006 as the executive director of development and alumni services after working in institutional advancement for 19 years at the University of Missouri–Columbia. His diverse marketing, public relations and fundraising background includes health care, the arts, human services and higher education.

He graduated from the University of Missouri–Columbia with a master's degree from the School of Journalism and a bachelor's degree in business administration with an emphasis in marketing.
