Columbia College online instructor receives prestigious Sam Houston State University Award
Recognized for her research and evidence-based strategies for probation department assessments for juveniles, Columbia College’s online graduate instructor Dr. Natalie Pearl recently received the 2012 Sam Houston State University Award from the American Probation and Parole Association (APPA) at the APPA Winter Training Institute in San Diego, Calif.
The APPA’s Sam Houston State University Award honors a practitioner who has published an article concerning probation, parole or community corrections that provides new information and insight into the operation, effectiveness or future of the community corrections profession. Published in Federal Probation, Pearl’s article, "Predicting Juvenile Recidivism Using the San Diego Resiliency Check-up," has helped probation departments nationwide better align resources with the risks and needs of juveniles under supervision and is based on original research carried out within the San Diego County Probation Department by Pearl and her graduate students.
Pearl is the director of research for San Diego County Probation and an online instructor for Columbia College’s graduate criminal justice research course.
APPA is an international association composed of members from the United States, Canada and other countries actively involved with probation, parole and community-based corrections. Members include all levels of government, staff, supervisors and administrators, educators, volunteers and concerned citizens with an interest in criminal and juvenile justice.
