Columbia College's Relay for Life team raises more than $18,000

Throughout the past year, the Columbia College Relay for Life team raised $18,645 for the fight against cancer. The fundraising culminated on June 11-12 at the 2010 Boone County Relay for Life held at Rock Bridge High School Stadium in Columbia, where Columbia College's total bested all 92 other teams by almost $4,000.

"We are a sweat-of-the-brow fundraising organization," said Eric Cunningham, associate dean for adult higher education and co-captain of the Columbia College Relay for Life team. "We accept direct monetary donations, but 90 percent of the funds we donate annually to the American Cancer Society are raised through a year-long series of fundraising events."

To raise the money, team members held a book sale, penny war, silent auction, can crushing operation, garage sales and basketball fundraisers.

Columbia College has been participating in Relay for Life for the past 11 years, donating a total of more than $125,000 to the American Cancer Society.

Columbia College, a private, nonprofit institution founded in 1851 in Columbia, Mo., educates more than 28,000 students each year and has more than 64,000 alumni worldwide. For more information, visit www.ccis.edu.
