Dr. Tonia Compton, assistant professor of history, was elected vice president of Region IV for Alpha Chi National College Honor Society at the organization’s super-regional convention March 22-24 in Baltimore, Md. Alpha Chi recognizes students from all academic disciplines. Membership is reserved for the top 10 percent of an institution’s juniors, seniors and graduate students. Compton’s term is for 2012-14.
“Tonia is a dedicated faculty member and tireless student advocate,” said Dr. Terry Smith, executive vice president and dean for Academic Affairs for Columbia College. “We are pleased that she is representing Columbia College in this national organization.” Compton holds bachelor’s degrees in history and political science from Columbia College, a master’s degree in history from Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas, and a doctorate in history from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
Compton serves as the faculty representative on the Columbia College Alumni Association Board of Directors. She is also the driving force behind the college’s celebration of Women’s History Month each March.
