Columbia College faculty and staff receive PTSD training

Columbia College now offers an interactive training course designed to help college employees better understand the student veteran community.

The course is a part of the “Give Them 30” campaign promoted by the school’s veterans service committee. The 30-minute online video course, created by Kognito, allows faculty and staff to role play and respond to veteran-specific situations. In one classroom scenario, a veteran student struggles to maintain focus during an exam. Acting as a faculty member, the participant must decide how to respond to help the student. Scenarios help staff members understand ways to open a dialogue with veteran students.

"Many of our staff and faculty work with veterans every day," said Keith Glindemann, assistant director of veterans services at Columbia College. "They might not know where to refer them when they’re asking something as simple as withdrawing due to military deployment or when they're having a hard time because of underlying medical conditions."

According to Kognito, one in five returning combat veterans is afflicted with stress disorders or injuries, making this training timely for all employees.
