Columbia College's Bob Burchard to help select team
Colorado Springs, Colorado - Led by 2004-05 All-Americans Shelden Williams (Duke / Forest Park, Okla.) and Craig Smith (Boston College / Los Angeles, Calif.), and featuring six first team all-conference selections from the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), Big East, Big Ten, Pacific 10 and the Southern Conference, 13 of the country's top collegiate players have accepted invitations to attend the July 28-Aug. 4 USA Basketball men's trials and training camp in Colorado Springs. The Trials and training camp will be utilized to select the USA squad that will compete in the World University Games that are being held Aug. 11-22 in Izmir, turkey. Athlete selections were made by the USA Basketball Men's Collegiate Committee, chaired by Syracuse University (N.Y.) head coach Jim Boeheim.
In addition to Smith and Williams, athletes confirmed to compete for spots on the 2005 USA World University Games Team include: Greg Brunner (Iowa / Charles City, Iowa); Randy Foye (Villanova / Newark, N.J.); Mike Gansey (West Virginia / Olmsted Falls, Ohio); Vincent Grier (Minnesota / Charlotte, N.C.); Matt Haryasz (Stanford / Page, Ariz.); Chris Hernandez (Stanford / Fresno, Calif.); Eric Hicks (Cincinnati / Greensboro, N.C.); Jeff Horner (Iowa / Mason City, Iowa); Gerry McNamara (Syracuse / Scranton, Pa.); Patrick Sparks (Kentucky / Central City, Ky.); and Brendan Winters (Davidson / Denver, Colo.).
In addition to the 13 above-listed athletes, players competing in the 2005 USA Basketball U21 World Championship Team Trials (July 21-23) who are not selected for the team are eligible to participate in the 2005 USA World University Games Team Trials.
The 2005 USA Basketball Men's National Team Trials, which will be used to select the final 12-member team, will be held July 28-31 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. Athletes eligible for this competition must be a U.S. citizen who is currently working toward an accredited university degree or has recently graduated.
The USA coaches and players who will participate in the 2005 USA World University Games Trials were selected by the 10-member USA Basketball Men's Collegiate Committee which is chaired by Boeheim and also includes National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) appointee Bill Self (University of Kansas); NAIA appointee Bob Burchard (Columbia College, Mo.); NCAA appointees Fran Dunphy (University of Pennsylvania), Tom Izzo (Michigan State University), Ernie Kent (University of Oregon), and Tubby Smith (University of Kentucky); NJCAA appointee Scott Schumacher (Kilgore College, Texas); and serving on the committee as the athlete representatives are Steve Wojciechowski (Duke University, N.C.) and a member of the 1995 USA Junior World Championship Team, and A.J. Wynder, the current head men's coach at Nassau Community College (N.Y.) and a member of the 1995 USA Pan American Games silver medalist squad.
