Columbia College's alumni magazine, affinity, wins three awards

The summer 2011 issue of Columbia College’s alumni magazine, affinity, has won three awards:

• 2012 Platinum Hermes Creative Award. Platinum is the highest level of Hermes awards, granted to only about 15 percent of all entries. There were about 4,700 entries from all over the U.S. and several other nations. The Hermes awards are administered by the Association of Marketing and Communications Professionals. • 2012 Silver Award of Distinction for a magazine in the educational institution category, Silver Award of Distinction for a magazine, interior design; 18th Annual Communicator Awards competition. This competition attracted more than 6,000 entries from companies and agencies of all sizes, making it one of the largest awards of its kind.

“We are thrilled to be recognized with these prestigious awards,” said Susan Davis, senior director of Alumni Relations. “The magazine is a great tool to keep our alumni informed about the college, and we hope to create more award-winning issues in the future.”

The cover of the summer 2011 edition of affinity featured current Columbia College Alumni Association President Martha Eberhard in retro attire demonstrating how to tell when an egg is hard-boiled. The main feature of the magazine showcased other alumni “how-to’s” ranging from how to capture a compelling photograph to how to perform a stand-up comedy routine. The summer edition was also the debut of the “Scootergraph.” Each issue included a cardboard cutout of the college’s cougar mascot, Scooter, instructing alumni to take Scooter with them in their travels, photograph him in different locales and send those back to the college to publish. Entries subsequently poured in from every corner of the U.S. and beyond.

The magazine is a joint effort between the Alumni Relations and Public Relations departments and Elias/Savion Advertising out of Pittsburgh, Pa. It is produced three times a year.
