Columbia College-Salt Lake to conduct commencement Oct. 9

Columbia College will confer associate, baccalaureate and master's degrees upon graduates at the Salt Lake campus commencement ceremony Saturday, Oct. 9. The ceremony will take place at 2 p.m. at the Utah Cultural Celebration Center, 1355 W. 3100 South, West Valley City, Utah. Dr. Gerald Brouder, president of Columbia College, will give the commencement address and confer the degrees with assistance from Gary Oedewaldt, associate dean for Adult Higher Education for Columbia College. Carol Winkler '93, Columbia College trustee and alumni association board member, will provide the alumni charge.

"Graduation is the culmination of students' efforts to improve their lives through education," said Brouder. "We are proud to honor their accomplishments."

Columbia College, a private, nonprofit institution, was founded in Missouri in 1851 as Christian Female College, the first women's college west of the Mississippi River to be chartered by a state legislature. The college changed its name to Columbia College in 1970 when it became coeducational.

Columbia College-Salt Lake was established in 1975 at Fort Douglas Army Education Center and originally served military personnel at Fort Douglas and the Army National Guard units in the area. The Salt Lake Campus relocated to a leased facility on 400 South Street in downtown Salt Lake City in 1989 and moved to Decker Lake in 1998 before moving to its current location.

In order to improve accessibility and increase visibility, the campus moved again in June 2008 to its present location near Interstate 15 and 5300 South in Murray, Utah. Columbia College-Salt Lake is part of the college's extended network of more than 30 Nationwide Campuses across the country and will celebrate its 35th anniversary in October.

Columbia College in Columbia, Mo., educates more than 29,000 students each year and has more than 64,000 alumni worldwide. For more information, visit
