We know there's more to life than studying. When you're ready to take a break from the books, you'll find plenty of recreational, cultural and sports opportunities in Crystal Lake.
One of the fastest growing counties in Illinois, McHenry County is rapidly changing from a rural economy to one based on service and industry. The McHenry County Conservation District, the first conservation district in Illinois, preserves large tracts of hardwood forests, rolling hills, glacial moraines, prairies and savannas.
The county is crossed from north to south by a paved bicycle trail, and miles of hiking and skiing trails are maintained for recreational use. Moraine Hills State Park offers a fishing and bird habitat, and the Windy City Balloon Port in Fox River Grove provides a ski jump training facility, as well as balloon rides. The Fox River flows through the east part of the county, providing boating and skimobile options, while the beautiful and pristine Kishwaukee River offers a haven to canoeing enthusiasts in the northwest portion of the county.
McHenry County's cultural center is in the town of Woodstock. The historic Courthouse Gallery, Opera House and outdoor musical events are features of the picturesque town square, which has been the location for the filming of several major motion pictures. The Crystal Lake area is graced by an active arts community, several arts organizations, dance studios and music centers.
