Rolla is located in south-central Missouri on the northern edge of the beautiful Ozark Mountains. As the seat of Phelps County, Rolla offers a unique combination of a small town feel with big-city opportunities. It is home to Missouri University of Science & Technology, US Geological Survey Mid-Continent Mapping Center, Phelps County Regional Hospital, Mark Twain National Forest Home Office, Brewer Science, Missouri Enterprise Business Assistance Center, Meramec Regional Planning Center, Ozark Actors Equity Theater, and Leach Theater.

Within a thirty-mile radius, one can find internationally acclaimed wineries, the old ironworks at Meramec State Park, and Fort Leonard Wood, a thriving military institution home to the Army's Engineering School, Military Police School, Chemical School, Maneuver Support Center, and the John B. Mahaffey Museum Complex. For recreation, the area offers concerts, fishing, hunting, boating, and only 90 minutes away, professional sporting events in St. Louis. The Remmers Lecture Series brings to town internationally renowned speakers, which have included Margaret Thatcher, Gerald Ford, Henry Kissinger, Colin Powell, Tip O'Neill, and Charles Kuralt.

Rolla is located equidistant from Columbia (to the north), St. Louis (to the east-northeast), and Springfield (to the southwest), and sits at the intersection of Interstate Highway 44, State Highway 63, and State Highway 72.
