Math Placement

Some students are required to take the Math Placement Exam before being able to register for a math course. Typically, these are students who did not take the ACT at all. To inquire about whether you need to take the math placement exam or not, contact the Registration Department.

If you do need to take the exam, it is given M-F, Noon-3:30 p.m. You must schedule the exam at least 24 hours in advance of the exam. The exam is given in two twenty-five minute sections, numerical skills and elementary algebra and is free to all Columbia College students. Study materials are available outside the Testing Services Center in St. Clair. Scoring is completed immediately after the test.

Residual ACT Exam

We give Residual ACT tests to students seeking admission to the college or a particular program with more stringent requirements (ex: Education). The Residual ACT is only valid at Columbia College. The exam costs $30, due at time of registration. One must register at least 2 weeks in advance. Scores are available no later than one week after the exam is completed and sent to the appropriate department (ex: Education or Admissions).

CLEP Exams

Clep exams are college level examinations through which one can receive college credit for prior knowledge in particular subject areas. For a complete listing visit the testing services office or www.collegeboard.com/clep. Most successful CLEP examinees are students who have work experience in the field of their examination or have taken the examination without completing or transferring the credit. Columbia College Testing Services does not encourage students with any background in a particular field to attempt cramming for an exam. It is often fruitless; as the exams are equivalent to a comprehensive final one might take in a corresponding course.

CLEP exams are scheduled on an individual basis. The total cost of the exam is $85: a $15 scheduling fee and a $70 fee for the actual CLEP test. The scheduling fee is due the day that you register to reserve your testing date and can be paid in the form of cash, check, or money order, and CLEP test fee can be paid the day of testing by credit card (Visa or Mastercard), check or money order made out to CLEP.

Students must register at least one week in advance on a first come, first served basis. Study materials are available through the aforementioned website link, Stafford Library, and in Room 211 in the Atkins-Holman Student Commons.

Proctors will not allow late examinees to test.
