Password Policy
Technology Services is in the process of establishing and refining security measures
for Columbia College's technology structure. To aid in this process, a
single user sign on process has been developed for Email, Web Advisor,
Datatel and Network access. These systems will have synchronized user names
and passwords and this information will be maintained in one location.
The new process will be implemented by 04/01/04. Under this policy users
will be required to change their passwords every 90 days. In terms of password
administration, the following list provides requirements for establishing
and maintaining passwords:
- Passwords shall be a minimum of 6 characters in length.
- Passwords will require a combination of characters from at least two of
the following categories:
- Alphabetical letters (a-z, or A-Z)
- Digits (0-9)
- Special characters (excluding @ and #)
Examples: Pzisg&21 or alv10$m
- Passwords shall be memorized. Passwords are not to be written down or stored by other means.
- Passwords shall not be shared with anyone for any reason. Please see the
Columbia College Ethics Code for Computer
Users.
- Users need to change your password prior to the expiration date or they will be locked out of the above-mentioned areas.
- Password reuse - New passwords must differ by at least 3 characters from the previous password which means users will not be able to use the previous 3 passwords.
- Account lockout - After 3 failed attempts to login, a user account will be locked out for 5 minutes.
- Notifications reminders will be sent to users 14, 7, 3, 2, 1 days before their passwords expire.
