Building Evacuation Procedures

Columbia College Day Students

Maps outlining evacuation routes are posted in all campus buildings. Please make yourself familiar with these exit routes for any building you frequent.

Written evacuation plans have been developed for all buildings at the traditional campus in the event of a fire or other emergency. These plans are in compliance with federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations.

An internal alarm or emergency personnel will signal emergencies that require all occupants to immediately leave a building or area.

General Procedures for a Building Evacuation

  • Leave the building or area immediately through the nearest exit. All occupants, including students, faculty, staff and visitors, are required to evacuate when an alarm sounds.
  • Do not use elevators during an evacuation.
  • Exit in an orderly fashion. Do not run or push. Running can lead to falls and injuries.
  • Report to emergency personnel the condition and location of anyone unable to leave a building or area or who need assistance.
  • Wait for the “all clear” from emergency personnel before attempting to re-enter a building or area. If a fire or other incident makes a building or area unsafe to enter for a period of time, students, faculty, staff and visitors will be directed to a temporary shelter.

Individuals With Disabilities

If you need assistance evacuating a building or area, ask a co-worker, friend, roommate or staff member for assistance. Or, notify someone that you will wait in the nearest stairwell. Do not use an elevator. You may also contact the Office of Campus Safety at (573) 875-7315. Let safety personnel know your exact location, and stay calm until help arrives.
