Underclass Student Career Roadmap
Freshman Year
- Get acclimated to Columbia College and to Columbia.
- Get involved in campus activities/organizations.
- Talk to students majoring in your areas of interest.
- Look at the catalog to determine course requirements for majors you are considering.
- Take the COPS and/or FOCUS (Career Guidance Systems)
- Participate in the Career Day.
- Take a variety of classes and stay open-minded about your choice of major.
- Become familiar with services and resources provided by the Office of Career Services.
Sophomore Year
- Get prepared to choose a major by the time you have completed 60 academic hours.
- Pay special attention to the courses you like the most, are the most successful in and feel the most comfortable in.
- Talk to students majoring in areas you are seriously considering.
- Talk to faculty members in the academic majors you are considering.
- Visit the Office of Career Services to get information on what you can do with specific majors.
- Take the COPS and/or FOCUS career assessments.
- Explore the Individualized Curriculum Program (ICP) if you are interested in creating your own major.
- Participate in the Career Day.
- Get/stay involved in campus
activities/organizations.
- Prepare to do a summer job/internship that will help you clarify your career goals.
Upperclass Student Career Roadmap
Junior Year
- Begin exploring how to implement your major in the world-of-work.
- Go by the Office of Career Services to explore how alumni are using their majors in the world-of-work.
- Choose elective courses that support potential career paths.
- Participate in an internship, either for academic credit or on your own, that will enable you to gain career-related work experience.
- Participate in the Career Day.
- Participate in the career-related workshops.
- Prepare your resume and register for jobs and internship listings. Contact the office for more info.
- Conduct informational interviews to gather information about career fields and to create a network of contacts.
- Make an appointment with the Office of Career Services if you have questions or to discuss your individual situation.
Senior Year
- Assemble your interview attire.
- Research prospective employers.
- Attend a Job Search Strategies workshop hosted by the Office of Career Services.
- Participate in a Mock Interview.
- Update your resume for database.
- Participate in the Career and Graduate School Fairs.
- Attend Resume Writing and Interviewing Tips workshops.
- Network, network, network!!!!!
- Conduct informational interviews with professionals who work in career areas you are considering. Contact Career Services.
- Participate in Online Career Fairs.
- Make an appointment with the Office of Career Services if you have questions or to discuss your individual situation.
