Underclass Student Career Roadmap

Freshman Year
  1. Get acclimated to Columbia College and to Columbia.
  2. Get involved in campus activities/organizations.
  3. Talk to students majoring in your areas of interest.
  4. Look at the catalog to determine course requirements for majors you are considering.
  5. Take the COPS and/or FOCUS (Career Guidance Systems)
  6. Participate in the Career Day.
  7. Take a variety of classes and stay open-minded about your choice of major.
  8. Become familiar with services and resources provided by the Office of Career Services.
Sophomore Year
  1. Get prepared to choose a major by the time you have completed 60 academic hours.
  2. Pay special attention to the courses you like the most, are the most successful in and feel the most comfortable in.
  3. Talk to students majoring in areas you are seriously considering.
  4. Talk to faculty members in the academic majors you are considering.
  5. Visit the Office of Career Services to get information on what you can do with specific majors.
  6. Take the COPS and/or FOCUS career assessments.
  7. Explore the Individualized Curriculum Program (ICP) if you are interested in creating your own major.
  8. Participate in the Career Day.
  9. Get/stay involved in campus activities/organizations.
  10. Prepare to do a summer job/internship that will help you clarify your career goals.

Upperclass Student Career Roadmap

Junior Year
  1. Begin exploring how to implement your major in the world-of-work.
  2. Go by the Office of Career Services to explore how alumni are using their majors in the world-of-work.
  3. Choose elective courses that support potential career paths.
  4. Participate in an internship, either for academic credit or on your own, that will enable you to gain career-related work experience.
  5. Participate in the Career Day.
  6. Participate in the career-related workshops.
  7. Prepare your resume and register for jobs and internship listings. Contact the office for more info.
  8. Conduct informational interviews to gather information about career fields and to create a network of contacts.
  9. Make an appointment with the Office of Career Services if you have questions or to discuss your individual situation.
Senior Year
  1. Assemble your interview attire.
  2. Research prospective employers.
  3. Attend a Job Search Strategies workshop hosted by the Office of Career Services.
  4. Participate in a Mock Interview.
  5. Update your resume for database.
  6. Participate in the Career and Graduate School Fairs.
  7. Attend Resume Writing and Interviewing Tips workshops.
  8. Network, network, network!!!!!
  9. Conduct informational interviews with professionals who work in career areas you are considering. Contact Career Services.
  10. Participate in Online Career Fairs.
  11. Make an appointment with the Office of Career Services if you have questions or to discuss your individual situation.
