KNOW YOURSELF AND WHAT WORKS FOR YOU
- Figure out your peak efficiency time. Use this time for your greatest
priorities and most difficult study tasks.

- Take time for recreation and relaxation after you have finished your
assignments.
- Learn to say NO when academic priorities come first.
DEVELOP GOOD STUDY HABITS
- Have a fixed place to study - library, residence hall, study room, or an
empty classroom.
- Have good lighting and enough space to include all study materials.
- Avoid distractions such as noise from the TV, stereo, telephone, and
friends.
- Have a fixed time to study.
- Study the same subject at the same time every week.
KNOW HOW TO STUDY
- Study intensely for a period of time and then take a break. (30
minutes studying/10 minute break, 45 minutes studying/15 minute break, 60 minutes
studying/20 minute break.)
- During a break period do something energizing: walk, eat a
healthy snack, or exercise.
- Study difficult material first and break it down into small manageable
parts.
- Study two hours for every hour of class time a week: For a 15 hour
week, study 30 hours.
- Use long time periods for in-depth study tasks.
- Use short time periods for flash cards, rote memorization and quick
review before or after class.
- Use time before going to sleep to review or get organized
for classes the next day.
BE AN ACTIVE LEARNER
- While studying, build a positive mental attitude.
- Read assignments before going to class.
- Read textbooks aloud.
- Turn headings into questions and write these in the margins of your book.
Highlight key points. Quiz yourself on the answers to your questions.
- Turn lecture notes into a review tool. Highlight key points and turn
these into review questions. To review the material, quiz yourself using the
questions you have written.
- Make flashcards, create memory tricks, and quiz yourself.
- Find a study partner or attend a study group for review sessions.
CLASSROOM TIPS
- Sit in the front of the classroom where it is easier to stay focused.
- Copy down all information written on the board.
- Go to every class. If you must miss a class due to illness or emergency,
notify the professor and make arrangements to collect lecture notes from another
student.
- Participate in class. This will enhance your concentration.
- Make an appointment to visit your professor when you are confused or do
not understand the work.
