DESCRIPTION The Jane Froman Singers is a mixed choral ensemble named for a distinguished Columbia College alumna. By participation in the ensemble, students will develop basic musical skills (pitch accuracy, intonation, tone quality, sight-singing). Through study and performance of the finest of literature students will develop a better understanding of, increased knowledge of, and an enhanced appreciation for choral music.
MEETINGS MWF 12:00-12:50 Froman Studio
REQUIRED DRESS Each student is required to purchase the following performance attire.
If assistance is needed please contact me immediately.
Women – long black formal dresses (3/4 sleeve & ankle length hem)
Men – white shirts, black tuxedo with black bow ties, socks
& shoes (Mr. Tuxedo will give you the full set for $200)
ATTENDANCE Students are expected to attend all scheduled classes and concert events. Due to the performance nature of the course offering, missing even one class will put a student at an extreme disadvantage. After five absences your grade will be lowered by one letter grade. Each absence after five will constitute an additional letter grade reduction. Missing a scheduled performance will lower your grade by two full letter grades. The only excused absences will be for required Columbia College functions (class field trips, exams, tours, etc.). This does NOT include job responsibilities or other activities in which you choose to participate. The broad allowances provided here make it unnecessary for you to submit absence excuses, although I would appreciate it if you would inform me ahead of time if you know you will be absent on a particular date. Plan your semester (and work schedules) based on the above requirements and the grade you wish to obtain in the class.
EVALUATION Grades are based on the following criteria.
Attendance at rehearsals and performances 90%
Performance skills test(s) over repertoire 10%
The skills test will be over the semester’s repertoire and will evaluate each singer in terms of pitch accuracy, intonation, tone quality, and interpretation.
CONDUCT Students are expected to conduct themselves on campus and in class so others are not distracted from the pursuit of learning. Discourteous or unseemly conduct may result in a student being asked to leave the classroom. Persistent misconduct on the part of a student is subject to disciplinary action as outlined in the Student Handbook.
Students may be disciplined for conduct, which constitutes a hazard to the health, safety, or well being of members of the College community or which is deemed detrimental to the College’s interest. These sanctions apply whether or not such conduct occurs on campus, off campus, at college sponsored or non-college-sponsored events. Disciplinary action may also be taken regardless of the existence of any criminal proceedings that may be pending or in progress.
Students attending class or related functions under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs will be asked to leave immediately. These students may be referred to the Wellness Center for evaluation before being allowed to continue in the class.
ADA STATEMENT Students with disabilities who may need academic adjustments or auxiliary aids or services for this course are required to register with the campus ADA Coordinator, MO Hall 106, 875-7626.
The following rehearsals are in addition to the scheduled class meetings and are mandatory.
