Columbia College to hold commencement ceremony Sept. 20

(Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.) -- Columbia College will confer 169 associate and bachelor’s degrees upon graduates from the Rolla and Fort Leonard Wood campuses at a commencement ceremony Saturday, Sept. 20. The ceremony will take place at 1 p.m. at Baker Theater in Fort Leonard Wood.

Ken Austin, dean of Central Texas College, Continental Campus, will give the commencement address. Dr. Gerald Brouder, president of Columbia College, will confer the degrees.

“Our graduates have succeeded in balancing their numerous responsibilities with their career goals," said Brouder. "Graduation is the culmination of their efforts and the result of wanting to improve their lives. We are proud to honor their accomplishments."

Columbia College was founded in Missouri in 1851 as Christian Female College, the first women’s college west of the Mississippi River to be chartered by a state legislature. The college changed its name to Columbia College in 1970 when it became coeducational.

The Fort Leonard Wood campus was established in 1974 to serve the military population and their families on the base and surrounding communities. Today it continues to serve civilian and military adult learners in the area.

The Rolla campus was established in 1992 as an extension of Columbia College-Fort Leonard Wood. Located on the Metro Business College campus, Columbia College-Rolla later moved to its present location on North Bishop in 1995 when enrollments outpaced available space.
