Matt Brock, Assistant Men's Basketball Coach
Matt Brock brings 10 years of college basketball coaching and playing experience to Columbia College.
How long have you worked for Columbia College?
I started in June 2012.
How did you end up here?
I am originally from Camdenton, Mo. I have always admired Coach Burchard - the way he ran his program and the success CC has had. When this opportunity presented itself, I was fortunate to have former assistant, Sean Dooley, and assistant coach Steve Burk support me. They were instrumental in getting me an interview. The chance to be a part of Coach Burchard’s staff and this team was a no-brainer. I am learning so much every day from our coaches and players.
Did you grow up playing basketball?
My father, Skip Brock, is the Head Boys Basketball Coach at Mt. Vernon High School in southwest Missouri. He has coached all my life; I went to my first game when I was 9 days old, and I grew up at his practices in the gym. I played in high school for my dad and then at Truman State in Kirksville for Jack Schrader, who now coaches at Culver-Stockton College.
Have you always wanted to coach basketball?
I have always loved the game. I initially thought I would major in business but quickly changed to exercise science and education. My family is full of coaches - not only me and my dad, but also my sister, Abi, who coaches at Central High School in Springfield and my brother, Tomas, who is an assistant at Northwest Missouri State.
Who has influenced you professionally?
My greatest influence in basketball is my father. He taught me the fundamentals, showed me how to continuously grow and learn as a coach and gave me a passion for the game. Coach Schrader - as well as all of the coaches I have worked for - has taught me a lot and shaped who I am as a coach and leader.
What’s your favorite thing about working for Columbia College?
My wife, Sheryl, and I have felt welcomed from the start. The staff here in the athletic department has made the transition easy. The excellence of each part of the institution and CC’s first-class approach set us apart.
What’s your favorite thing about living in Columbia?
The MKT trail, no question.
What are your interests outside of basketball?
Sheryl and I really enjoy running and biking. I like to play golf, read mostly non-fiction, and we are active in our church.
What are your favorite sports teams?
The Columbia College Cougars, the St. Louis Cardinals and the Kansas City Chiefs.
Why would you encourage folks to come out and watch the Cougars this winter?
Our team is fun to watch and to coach. We have a great group of talented players. They are quality students and high character young men.
Coach Davis and the women’s team is poised for another great season as well.
Our game administration team, led by Drew Grzella, does an outstanding job of making the game experience entertaining and enjoyable for the entire family.
