Configure your computer from off-campus

The ColumbiaCollege or ccResNet access points provide a secure encrypted connection that requires your computer to be identified and validated. Please follow the steps below from off-campus, according to the appropriate operating system, to setup your computer to access each Columbia College Wireless Network. Click here if you are on-campus configuring your computer.

• Windows XP

   

  Windows Vista

  1.      Click the Windows Start button  in the bottom left hand corner of the desktop.

  2.      Click Control Panel. 

  3.      The Control Panel opens.  Double-click Network and Sharing Center.

  4.      Click Setup a connection or network located under the task panel on the left hand side.

  5.      Click Manually connect to a wireless network.  Click Next. 

  6.       The next screen will prompt you to Enter information for the wireless network. 

  a.      Type in a Network name (See chart below).  Choose one network name below.

  Columbia College Area	Network name
  Public areas (Cougar Cafe, Library, Dulany, etc)	ColumbiaCollege
  Residence Hall	ccResNet

  NOTE:  The Network name must be typed exactly as shown above.  Follow these steps to set up each desired wireless network.   

   

  b.      Select WPA-Enterprise as the Security Type. 

  c.       Verify the Encryption Type is TKIP.

  d.      Click Next.

  7.      A message saying Successfully added will appear.  Click Change connection settings. 

  8.      A Wireless Network Properties dialog box opens.  Click the Security Tab.

  9.      Select Protected EAP (PEAP) as the Select Authentication Method section.

  10.  Click Settings. 

  11.  A Protected EAP Properties dialog box opens.  Select Secured password (EAP-MSCHAP v2) in the Select Authentication Method section.

  12.  Click Configure. 

  13.  The EAP MSCHAPv2 Properties dialog box opens.  Make sure Automatically use my Windows logon name and password (and domain if any) option is NOT checked.

  14.  Click Ok to close EAP MSCHAPv2 Properties.  Click Close to exit wireless network connection wizard.

  15.  Repeat from Step 4 to set up a second wireless network (ColumbiaCollege or ccResNet). 

   

  Windows XP

   

  1.      Click Start → Control Panel.

  2.      The Control Panel opens.  Double-click Network Connections. 

  3.      Right click on Wireless Network Connection. 

  4.      Click Properties.

  5.      The Wireless Network Connection Status dialog box opens.  Click the Wireless Networks Tab. 

  6.      Click the Add button under Preferred Networks section of the Wireless Networks Tab.

  7.      The Wireless Network Properties dialog box opens.  Type in a Network name (SSID). Choose one network name below.

   

  Columbia College Area	Network name (SSID)
  Public areas (Cougar Cafe, Library, Dulany, etc)	ColumbiaCollege
  Residential Halls	ccResNet

   

  NOTE:  The Network name (SSID) must be typed exactly as shown above.  Follow these steps to set up each desired wireless network.  

   

  8.      Select WPA from the Network Authentication menu. 

  9.      Select TKIP as the Data Encryption type. 

  10.  Click the Authentication Tab. 

  11.  Select Protected EAP (PEAP) as the EAP Type. 

  12.  Click Properties.

  13.  A Protected EAP Properties dialog box opens.  Uncheck to deselect Validate server certificate. 

  14.  Select Secured password (EAP-MSCHAP v2) as the Select Authentication Method section.

  15.  Click Configure. 

  16.  The EAP MSCHAPv2 Properties dialog box opens.  Make sure Automatically use my Windows logon name and password (and domain if any) option is NOT checked.

  17.  Click Ok to close out of all windows. 

  18.  Repeat from Step 1 to set up a second access point, either ColumbiaCollege or ccResNet.
